I'm scared to root my Evo 3d. PLEASE HELP!

I was told rooting would be beneficial to me because I'm starting online classes but I can't afford to add a data card to my account. I was told that I would be able to tether for free if I rooted. I have no idea where to even begin and I don't know what roms and kernels and flashing are. I'm a pretty fast learner and good at following step by step if anyone would be kind enough to help me out. I have a Mac desktop. Also what other benefits would I gain by rooting? Thanks in advance guys ;-*
