So, with all the best will in the world, my upgrade date came, and I was faced with the choice of either sticking with my 6P (which I do love) or move on.

I chose to move on....

I apologise. I still have the 6p and it will become my semi retired back up phone, but times move on.

Best of luck with the new phone! I'm sure you'll love it, but I'm still thrilled with my 6P. Hope to get another year out of it, then buy a good phone from the year or two before.

I am going to miss using the 6p every day....it is still the best phone I've ever had. But was just starting to show it's age a wee bit.

I'll be keeping it safe, and every now and then, take it out the drawer, turn it on, and push some buttons. For old times sake.

Don't blame you Tony. I'll be doing the same as soon as my renewal date comes round.
The 6P is a great phone, but the battery is just too much of a let-down.

I'm holding out for the pixel 2 XL. it seems Google got the message of small bezels, big screen, and stereo speakers. so I'm def in on that. if the 6P had a removable battery, I would keep this phone another year probably, that was really it's downfall.

I'm with you here.

I actually just replaced my battery and it's like-new again. Over an hour SoT today and at 78% (it's 2:40pm and the phone has been off-charger since 7:00am).

This should more than hold me over until I get the Pixel 2 XL.

The LG V20 has a removable battery, better processor, SD card support, dual cameras and better audio (although not stereo speakers) - what about getting one of those and saving your money for a couple of years?

Ehhh I do not like LG's skin, and I'm too lazy to attempt to root or change anything. As much as I would like to save some cash, I will be keeping the new pixel for at least 2 years, so I'll get my money's worth out of the device.

I actually just sold my S8 as I did not really ever warm up to it and two days ago I was contacted by a great guy about buying his pixel XL at a steal but I've always been a huge fan of the Nexus 6p. He happened to have a 64g 6p new in box which I bought instantly because he said he'd sell it to me for $150!! I almost passed out when he said that. So I did the opposite of the OP and sold my S8 and bought a new Nexus 6p. The Nexus 6p is my all time favorite Android device I've ever used to date. I typically keep one smaller screen device and one larger screen device which is my second device for movies and media. The 6p has that large 5.7 inch display which I preferred over the pixels 5.5 and I could have gotten the Pixel XL for $300 bucks which was a deal of the century too just like my 6p was. I just like the 6p better. I'm not a fan of the looks of the Pixel where I think the 6p build looks great. It's unique to me. Huawei is to get the credit there though. They make awesome products. OP you are going to love that S8 screen resolution for sure! Congrats on your new phone. It's definitely a good one for sure.

What will you be getting? I've just done just the opposite of everyone and bought a new 6p lol. I absolutely love this phone. I've yet to use a better Android phone.
