I'm Sure It's A Hack, But Has Anyone Seen This Befor?

Hi all, My friend has an S5 with a problem that I didn't know existed. The text program that he uses is the stock Samsung messages. I have a running conversation thread with my friend. This morning, I started getting texts on my S10 from my friend's S5. In the thread with my friend, from another person. I know for a fact that the person was not him. They tried to say that they were my friend but I know from the way that they talked that it wasn't him. He also verified that he did not write the texts. My friend can indeed still send texts in that same thread still but so can the third person. We almost certainly know the third person and they live a few thousand miles away, so they have not had his phone. How is it possible for a third person to infiltrate their way into a stock texting app thread and is there anything short of trashing the phone that we can do? Thanks for any help.

Is that thread a group texting thread to begin with? If it's a messaging thread between only two individuals, I'm not sure there's a way to suddenly change it to a group text.

You can add a 3rd person between 2 individuals in Samsung message app , but both don't know how it happened is strange.

Thanks for the help. It is a thread just between my friend and me. Neither one of us knows how this third person was able to get into the conversation. Not sure if they figured out a way to hack it or if that is even possible.

I'm not sure what happened , but be sure the s5 is not up to latest security updates for long time so possibly it could get hacked very easily.

A phone from 2014 is way out of date security wise. He get any strange texts with a link or anything? May actually be some kind if malware/hack. It's extremely rare but vulnerabilities do get patched on a regular basis and the S5 is going to be on Android 6.0 with a security patch from 2017.

Does the Samsung messaging app offer a web interface as well? If so, he may have simply signed onto the friend's account and is posting as him from the web.

I wish I could say that pranking was a possibility but I know a 1000% that it is not a prank.
That's what makes a good prank.
He could even schedule the send time to trick you further.
In the meanwhile, close the thread you are both on with the 'interloper' and begin a new one.
Good luck!
