Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app...

Re: Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app

Images in the Download directory don't automatically show up in the main Google Photos feed. You'd have to set the Download directory to backup and sync automatically to your Google Photos in the cloud -- I believe then, the images would show up in your main feed (i.e., once they've backed up to the cloud). Otherwise, you can always see the images by tapping Menu>Device Folders, and selecting Download.

I personally wouldn't set the Download directory to backup automatically -- that means any image you download from anywhere that goes to the /Download directory will automatically backup to your Google Photos cloud. That could get pretty cluttered pretty quickly.

See that's the thing.... They DON'T SHOW UP under download in the local device folders. The folder is there, but the images aren't there when I use the Google photos app. If I go to that SAME directory with a file explorer, the photos are all there.

Also, other albums that I don't have set to sync show up just fine under device folders.

It's only photos I download from Chrome that do this.

Hmm. You've already checked to see if there's a .nomedia file in the /Download directory?

Also, just to be sure -- you are talking about the Chrome browser, and not the Google search app, right? In either case, go to Settings>Apps, select the app you're using to download, then Permissions, and see if Storage permission is turned on. If it's off, the images will save to a protected system directory that no other app can see.

I'm guessing that there may be a few things going on here.
First is to confirm that you've enabled backup and sync of the Download folder in the Google Photos application: (from in Photos) select the hamburger menu in the upper left corner -> Settings -> Back up & sync -> Back up device folders -> Be sure that the Download toggle is enabled (see screenshot)
Second (and just as important) - you are aware that the pictures that you downloaded via Chrome are are NOT going to show up in the Photos app on the date that you downloaded the pictures, but on the date embedded in the picture, right? I've already done a random sample of this and had to scroll back through my Photos list to the date embedded in the pictures if I expected to find it.

Sync is enabled. One image shows in the folder through the photos app, the rest don't. Here's the same shot through FILESScreenshot_20190327-071842.jpgScreenshot_20190327-071830.jpg

Is this nomenclature a clue?Screenshot_20190327-072245.jpg

Re: Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app

I have the same thing in which some images don't show on the download folder. This is because the files are located in separate locations depending on where you save them from.

Re: Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app

"/document" is the protected system directory. If you download an image using the Google search app (not Chrome) without Storage permission turned on, it goes to that directory. Are you absolutely sure you weren't using the Google app to download? It's a common mixup.

Yup.... Out of habit, I use the search bar on the home screen....so, it IS the Assistant that's causing the issue....

What a shame it has to be that way...

Thanks!

OK -- so if you make sure Storage permission is turned on for the Google app, then any image you download using the Google app itself should go straight to the /Download directory. It should then get backed up to Google Photos automatically and appear in the Google Photos feed. Hopefully that works!

That worked! Thank you...

I guess I am just so accustomed to apps asking me for permission right off the bat that if they don't, I figure it doesn't need it.

Re: Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app

Having to grant Storage permission for the Google app seems like some kind of oversight on Google's part. It never made sense to me, and they never prompt you to grant the permission. It's a trick I learned from another member on this forum. I've sent feedback to Google about this, but who knows if they'll ever act on it.:-\

Re: Images downloaded from Chrome show up under the stock "files" app, but NOT in Google photos app

This is still an ongoing issue for me. It's absolutely maddening because none of my apps can see this folder and and i always end up taking screenshots to make them show in my gallery.

It should NOT be this hard...

Here's another thread on it: https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe...os_downloaded_from_google_chrome_in_download/

Click on the 3 horizontal lines in the Google Photos app then select device folders. The Download folder shows up . Till you mentioned this I hadn't really given it much thought . But I had noticed what you mentioned and I was transferring the pics to DCIM/ Camera folder . Pain in the butt.
