unfortunately, bad signal is fairly common issue with this phone...some dont have the problem (like me thankfully) but some do.

you are running the latest radio so rooting and throwing a ROM on there isn't going to make much if any difference.

there is a couple things you can do though.
how are the phones in the store (gnex phones) does you phone have the same signal or worse signal. if worse, you know it is something to do with your phone.

try to replace the SIM card at the store (will be free and quick) if that doesn't fix it you can manually update your PRL.
i did this and it helped quite a bit actually
power down your phone and pull the SIM card out.
boot up your phone and wait a minute or so.
shut down the phone
put the SIM back in and boot up again.
this should change the PRL # and see if that changes the signal. it helped mine dramatically in places around town (where before i would be on crappy 3g and now have a strong 4g signal...other areas were unaffected )

if neither of those fixes the issue, try a new replacement nexus...and if that doesn't work, PUSH for an S3. talk about how you paid $300 for the nexus and had nothing but issues and talk to them about the S3 being $200 now. PUSH PUSH PUSH...because i agree...anything else is a downgrade.

Thanks yeah all the things you have mentioned I've done. I've also had numerous replacement all with the same issue. I'm gone from doing factory reset and not installing any of my applications, 2 going into safe mode none of which helped. Also there was another application fix I did which was *#*#checkin#*#* and nothing works. Ivy changed my PRL version. They also done something to the extent of the * 228 where it syncs data and voice.
