Important info about the battery pull tab READ THIS

Usually, I don't want to admit to being stupid. But I received my FIRST Droid, the X, via FedEx. When I opened the back to install the battery, there was a tab that said to "Pull". Thinking I was smart enough to read directions (if anyone wants to question my intelligence I can post verifiable proof of my IQ), I pulled the tab. Removed the entire film that went along with it. Because this was not addressed in the instructions, I honestly thought I was doing the right thing.

Phone worked great. But suddenly, I stopped receiving emails. Thought I'd do a battery pull. Solves about 95% of phone problems. But I couldn't remove the battery. Then searched on how to do it. Found out that tab was supposed to still be there. Now I have to remove the battery with a small flathead screwdriver. That did fix the email issues, btw.

Now I find out this voids the warranty. Luckily I saved the film and can put it back in before I take it back to Verizon for a replacement.

This should have been better communicated in their print materials that came with the phone. I'm not an idiot. I was doing what the phone said. "Pull This"

I will be getting a new phone out of this. Just don't think that only idiots could do the procedure.

Don't blame Newbies because Verizon/Motorola cannot communicate properly.

10-4 Keith. It's the way it's worded, and has nothing to do with anyone's smarts or lack of. That's why the comments on the blog post got locked. You can bet your last dollar that comments including the words stupid, idiot, etc etc will be cleansed from this thread too. :)

This is something I hope VzW/Motorola address.

I would have no sympathy for the people who pulled this TAB off, if in the literature that came with the phone that they explained what it was for and about it..... but alas I looked through my tiny little books and they don't..

Still I think people might want to calm down and think before ripping things off a phone I would have stopped ripping that thing off as soon as I saw it was the entire area where the battery goes.. But that's just me.. I do think in their little getting started book they should have put a single picture in there with two sentances and this would at least be an issue they could say; "Hey if you would have read the Getting Started guide you would have known." It's all about C.Y.A Motorola you dropped the ball on this one..

I knew from watching numerous pre-release videos what the tab want meant for. That said, it is a very flimsy piece of plastic that will inevitably break off after repeated battery removals. Maybe it would have been smarter to attach a tab directly to the battery instead.

There are persons on the forum questioning whether this is real... Well, it is. I'm the wife that pulled the warranty-voiding tab...

I have an email from a Motorola CSR stating that their position is that the warranty is void. I talked with the CSR a bit about how pulling the tab that says "Pull" shouldn't void a warranty, they said that I could send the phone in for them to review, but was assured this would very likely just result in a confirmation of the same, since this is what the CSR system states.

The reason given for the warranty violation was this - "You have done physical damage to the phone. Physical damage voids the warranty." Everyone I have spoken to thus far has used this exact same line - Verizon and Motorola are in lock-step on this.

Here's a point to mull over for Droid X Owners: What's going to happen over the next few months when users need to pull their batteries and tear this tab in the process? Are they going to be sweating their warranties too?

I'd say yes, worry about your warranty - aparently the plastic tears easily. It tore while I pulled the tab to discover it's purpose - I was still quite skeptical when I pulled it, so I didn't pull it hard.

Calm Isn't the Best Solution

As as you state, the "user manual" (if it can be called that) gives no mention of the battery pull tab. I looked, looked, consulted my geeky husband (he has a Droid, 1st gen), and seriously considered looking it up online. Now I wish I had. Instead, I decided that it just couldn't be that complicated... It must be what it looks like, a pull-tab to engage a battery within the device.

I stopped pulling the tab when I realized that it was tearing and that it had adhesive under it. I could also see a portion of the silver backing of the phone. I KNEW this wasn't right, so I put the tab back down and called support.

Before you ask why I called Verizon... I was frustrated that by following the instructions I almost ripped off the battery removal tab. I was hoping there was a fix, like a new backing sticker. I never imagined that it would kill the warranty.

I'm finding that scores of people have pulled of the backing completely, some ripping it in the process, others have even thrown it away! I think the difference in outcome and ire is that they didn't all call tech support to find out WTF. If these people do need service in the future I think we'll be seeing way more complaints and angry people.

I would have no sympathy for the people who pulled this TAB off, if in the literature that came with the phone that they explained what it was for and about it..... but alas I looked through my tiny little books and they don't..

Still I think people might want to calm down and think before ripping things off a phone I would have stopped ripping that thing off as soon as I saw it was the entire area where the battery goes..

i did too

i pulled it and it tore off. didnt realize it wasnt supposed to come off until i went to put my SD card in and i had to remove the battery first. it took some skill to get the damn battery out, but once it was out i wrapped a thin piece of tape around the battery with a tab sticking out to pull if i ever had to take the battery out again.
from what i can see i wasnt the only one who did this, there are multiple threads about this issue.
I dont know why this would void the warranty, the only purpose for the tab is to pull the battery out. its not a function of the phone .if we have an issue with the phone i'm sure it was not caused from a damn plastic tab to lift battery out.

I ordered mine from VZW on the 15th and received it the 16th. I watched the battery video on Androidcentral.com before I ever even opened the panel. Well you can imagine my surprise when mine didnt even have a friggin Pull Tab...I had to use a credit card to pop the battery. Now I read this and I am panicked that they will think I removed it when it was never there to begin with. I will be calling both Moto and VZ tomorrow to make sure it is documented that I never had it to begin with. This whole deal seems ridiculous and if enough people get voided warranties on a $560 phone because of 1 cent pull tab I think Moto would have a real PR mess on their hands...so I hope they wont be total idiots about this whole thing and keep the big picture in mind...

I'll report back tomorrow after talking with the CSR's...

Update on PULL/VZW/Moto/Warranty

Hi all - some of you have read my Slashdot journal on the Pull-tab and warranty.

My wife did get an email from Motorola confirming that her warranty was voided by pulling and tearing the tab, HOWEVER...

She spoke to someone else from Motorola yesterday who thought that sounded a little nuts, spoke to someone in support who confirmed that such an occurrence would NOT void the warranty.

This calmed things down for us a bit, but for the record we have:

Written: you voided your warranty
Verbal: you haven't voided your warranty

The Mrs. believes she has a little more cover now, and is finally actively using and enjoying her DroidX, but it'd be really great if Motorola would address this issue directly...

(will be reposting this to other fora where I have been active to update the situation).

Imo, this should not lead to voided warranties. They give "Zero" indication of what that tab is for. Only when I went online and seen the unboxing of the droid x did I figure out what the tab was used for.

Luckily, I only tore the paper a lil bit, so it should still get the battery out with no issues!!

Here is my question, if I buy an OEM replacement, which I was going to any way due to horrid battery life, and then use that one in case of warranty issue, could they track that? I do mean oem, exact right battery by motorola.

This thread is hilarious to me. I am new to Droid (love it!) and I actually called when I couldnt' get the freakin pull tab off. lol I was worried it would CAUSE battery problems .....the woman at Verizon had no clue. She just said "Well it should just come off!" I said "it doesn't, I can pull the whole black plastic off WITH it, should I do that?" "So the whole backing would come off too? Hmmm, I'm not sure" she replies, "hang on".........sigh. Comes back and says "Don't pull it off, you would then have a warranty issue, just LEAVE it on!" They were just so? ummm? Helpful? ;-)

I find it hysterical that we can operate these phones with all their complex abilities and customizations, but we get all buggered up with small plastic battery lift tab like the silk ribbons in every 9V device I've ever used.

Has no one had a toy that needed a pull tab to remove the batteries? No one ever changed a smoke detector's batteries?

All the tech savvy in the world and people are foiled by such a low tech solution.

My first thought was that it was something that was sealing a battery or contacts and needed to be pulled, before you put your battery in. I couldn't find anything about it, so I just went ahead and put my battery in to see if it worked and it did. I can certainly see how people could give it a tug and rip it right off without a second thought.

I used an app on my BB called QuickPull. It alleviates the need to pull the battery. Not sure if there is one for the DroidX.

how would it void? doesnt make sense???

how is it, that ripping a sticker off, is physical damage? its not actually damaging the phone or screwing up the OS. doesnt make sense.
