Impossible to delete a phone number form contacts

[Android Central Question]

I have now spent hours trying to find an answer as to how to delete a phone number from a contact Galaxy S6. Why is this so difficult? I have tried Google contacts-the deleted number does not show up. I have deleted the number on my phone as well and it is gone under "details" but still shows up when the contact is pulled up. The only option I have is to delete and reenter the contact. Not OK for what should be such a simple task.

Did you originally enter the contact manually, or did it come from another app? If it came from another app, wenter it manually, then delete it. (But the other app may add it back - and there's nothing you can do about that - some apps are just not well-thought-out.)

If the app is a Phone or Device contact, it won't show up in Google contacts. Only those entered as Google contacts get backed up to Google.

When using android's contact app and editing a contact, sometimes on the edit page there will be two tabs at the top like "Google" and "phone". Check both tabs as sometimes there is data in both.

I have this problem as well, contact lists 4 numbers, but only 3 when trying to edit. 4th number also does not show on the PC. and the 4th is the one I try to delete....

Welcome to Android Central! When you open that contact in your Contacts app, tap the Menu button -- is there an option to Unmerge or Unjoin? I wonder if the phone might have merged a couple of duplicate contacts.

Thanks B. Diddy, that was the way. There was the option to unlink the contact from some apps (wa, telegram, signal) and that solved it,

I also had this same problem. Samsung S9. I had to delete the Verizon Cloud app from my phone, and then the deleted phone number did not show up anymore! Stupid Verizon app. What an annoying waste of time!

I had this same problem on a Samsung Galaxy S10 running Android 12. Very frustrating that you can't fully edit your contacts in the default contacts app! There was no "menu" button in the Contacts app (the closest thing was a "more" button in the lower right but there was no "unmerge" option). Instead there was a "Storage locations" button that only appears at the bottom of the contact after scrolling all the way to the end of a specific contact's page. When I clicked on that there was a "Verizon Cloud (Cloud)" entry that could be unlinked by pressing an "Unlink" button to the right. That solved the problem in my case.

Welcome to Android Central! The "More" button is essentially the Menu button (the 3 dot icon is the standard appearance for a menu button). But you found the right option anyway. Were there multiple storage locations shown there? If so, that would confirm that multiple contact entries had been merged.
