Impossible to select default browser

Very happy with the M3 except for the absolute impossibility to have the selection for opening links stay persistently.
Any link in e.g. Google Newsstand pops up the open with Once / Always dialog. Amazingly even clicking a link inside e.g. Chrome forces me to select the browser to use.
Checked all applicable settings and nothing is wrong. Default browser is Firefox, which never gets opened without selecting in the pop-up every time.
I expect permission weirdness. Surely this must be avoidable.

Default App Manager to make it easier to set and clear default apps. If that doesn't work, a full backup (see Backing up an Android Device) which you should have anyway, then reflash the firmware.
