Alright,

I have an HTC Evo 4G via a Sprint contract. Obviously it doesn't work in Afghanistan. I will have access to wireless internet here in a few days and I have the google voice app downloaded on my phone. I'm hearing a lot of back and forth about how it will or won't work because of CDMA and being out of the country costs money to use etc.etc. etc. I know for a fact that an Apple iPod touch works over here via wifi and voice app. Is there any reason why the EVO won't work? Do I need to drop $400 on an iPod so I can talk to my family? Please don't make switch to the dark side! Thanks a million fellas.

Download (free version) Groove IP app and with Google Voice you can make calls. It will become a VOIP phone then and you don't need sprint service. You can also use skype or google talk where you can video chat over wifi.

Hey jasonmcmahon24,

Did you ever get the wifi to work on your droid? My civilian company forced me to the "dark side," but I plan on being in your situation soon and will come back to the light. I want to know if I can video chat, skype, etc with wifi only.

Thanks!
