In Call Microphone - Speakerphone works, regular does not

When my son's Fascinate makes or receives a call, nobody can hear him. If he switches to speakerphone, they can hear him - even if he is the same distance away from the phone. My assumption is that it is the same microphone - so I am not sure what the issue is. We can switch back and froth mid-call and you go from hearing him to not hearing him.

My wife's Fascinate is fine.

I looked around and found a few mentions of this issue in other spots.

Any ideas?

A friend had this issue vzw replaced it a it was less then a year old. if you think it is software problem. ODIN a stock recovery image to the phone.

I dropped my phone which caused a similar issue to yours. I was rooted so I flashed back to stock which fixed the problem then I rerooted and phone is good now. If you're not rooted I would take it in and get a refurbished one.
