In messenger, why won't my emoji icon open my emoji's?

In messenger, why wont my emoji icon open my emoji's

I'm sorry, it's in messages not messenger:
When typing a text message, the smiley face icon under the paperclip, will not open my emoji's. It worked fine yesterday. I have the samsung galaxy s5 active. Can anyone help with this?
