Inconsistent volume issues with my MyTouch 4G

I've had the phone for a couple of years and play Mp3s daily and never had a problem. Just recently though I've had this odd problem where some, but only some MP3s play barely above a whisper... but the rest are just fine. These are MP3s that I've listened to before and they played fine. I even dumped them from the phone and re-synched them, restarted the phone the whole thing and I still have this problem. I've listened to these same MP3s on my computer and they play just fine. Here's the odd thing: if I pull the earbuds out then I can occasionally get the MP3s to play at normal volume, but then I stick the phones in and again, they're whisper quiet. I thought that it might be an issue with the phones or with the phone connection on the device, but yet other MP3s play consistently with the proper volume (when using the very same earbuds). Incidentally, I'm using this DoubleTwist program to synch everything to the phone. What gives...?
