Increase your reputation - please help with the rooting FAQ

You know what else would be nice to have? A very basic definition of what overclocking is.

I'm overclocked and to be honest... I'm not pefectly clear on what it actually does. I think it allows the processor and the electical frequency of the battery to be faster and higher than stock settings - and that speeds of the screen animations and general snappiness of the device. It also creates the opportunity for prematurely aging the CPU and possibly even overheating the battery and effectively frying the device.

So, without the answer... here's some good FAQs:

-- What is overclocking?
-- How do I overclock and why should I / shouldn't I overclock?
-- What are the pros and cons of overclocking?

I know this was intended as a FAQ for rooting and not overclocking... But, I think ovderclocking is so closely linked with rooting it would be good in the FAQs to have a concise and clear definition of what it actually is. Or at least a statement regarding: "if you want to overclock, you need to root first... and this is how you ovreclock... and this is what you should know about overclocking..." -- just my $0.02.

Yes this would be great and would also be stickied.

How often should I make a nandrioid backup.

anytime prior to making a modification ( loading. Theme with metamorph, changing roms, overclocking, or anything like that, you never know what will mess your phone up, so its best to have that backup

As far as backups go, doesn't this trump any third party app that you might install?

Okay guys, check out the FAQ and let me know what you think so far. I really appreciate everyones contribution to this.

Okay overclocking now has it's own FAQ. If you have any how-to info on overclocking, please post here.

Bizz--- you da man!! that was a sweet answer to some overclock FAQs - thanks

Cory - I like the root FAQ's- looks nice and clean. Good job! I also like it closed. That will avoid the thread going off subject and addressing everyone's "issues". It's just a reference. If someone needs help, that should be a seperate thread.

I need to add this

Motorola underclocked the CPU to 550mhz but it's not considered overclocking until you clock the cpu past the stock speed of 600 mhz

so sholes is still in it to win it.. just downloaded the 2.06 update from their new site and moved it to my sd card via astro.. then rebooted into recover mode, selected the new file and bam.. I'M now using 2.06 smoked glass.. its smith and seems to be flawless. ruins cooler than 2.05 too..

I'm still debating if the Sholes option should be part of the FAQ. What do you guys think? I personally have no experience with it.

I like Sholes because it's basically idiot proof. But, until it's up and running thru a market downloadable app, I'd hold off including it in FAQs.

Good suggestion. I've already screwed up my phone trying to install 2.0.6. When it boots up it says "Sholes Mod" but when I get to the desktop there doesn't appear to be anything different about it all, so clearly I'm an idiot and clearly the better route is to wait for the downloadable app :)

Corey, that's NOT what I meant. sorry for any implied insult.

Bizz and a few others may remember the absolute headache and anguish I went thru routing and installing my Sholes rom. Bizz patiently held my hand the whole way thru, something I will never forget.

I DID NOT follow instructions from Sholes very well and made a very simple process into a nightmare. I figured many members could learn from my mistakes and root much easier.

I figured why add another entire step to the ordeal by going to site, download, unzip, move to card, yada- yada- yada when it'll probably be up and running smoothly within a few days as a market app.

seriously, you had problems with sholes 2.0.6? - well, then I'm definitely screwed if I try it.

I totally didn't take it as an insult and I apologize if my response seemed like I took it that way (that's the problem with the internet). I was actually poking fun at myself & agreeing with you at the same time, so no worries!!

A few minutes ago I just flashed the 2.0.1 ROM thebizz posted about and it seems I'm up and running now.

I had no problems with it what so ever.. but I already had the app on my phone... btw it rings a hell of a lot better than 2.05...

You should like the rom. It had the fastest boot I've experienced
