Incredible Review Thread

Just @ VZW Store. Tried Incredible. 100% keeping my Droid

Just at my local VZW store and spent an hour "playing" w/incredible.

I consider myself an adept power user of my Motor Droid. No I am not a root user. I use my Droid about 4-5 he's a day and run a successful business only using my Droid.

These are my initial impressions and only mine.

If you have not had the experience of using the Incredible do not criticise my initial impression.

As follows:

Pros:

The camera on the HTCI makes using the Motor Droid seem like a 2MP camera from years ago. It is simply Incredible. Colors pop out ina way that makes you feel as though you have a DSLR in your hands.

FM radio is cool but you must have headphones plugged in.

Screen swapping is a Tad faster and 7 of them could be very handy.

To me that's where it ends.

Cons:

Coming from Motor Droid the outside and menu key's are set up differently
Seemingly not a big issue but it plain stinks. As a right handed user using 1 hand 90% of the time, it stinks. Period.

Having to use the headphones to listen to the radio as I do in bed at night is simply ridiculous if not totally impractical.

The feel is less than OK. Small, lightweight, inexpensive, and really not a good feel at all in the hand.

Unless you plan to use the phone w/ the battery cover off the "Ferrari Red" colors are essentially not noticeable. Don't plan on the chicks staring at you with that Droid lust some expect.

OVERALL::::: If you are a current Droid user, your upgrade, if pre ordered, may find you wishing you played with the HTCI first.

Side by side action showed a slight edge to the HTCI.

Camera on HTCI simply rocks and makes the Motor Droid seem useless.

Play with the new critter before switching if your a current Droid user

Newbees will wet themselves coming from anything to the Droid operating system.

Cheers and I hope in some small way you will fond it imperitive to test it out before switching from the original.

Thats your problem. You are not everyone.

The Moto Droid doesn't even have a radio... so what's your point?

The only valid point is inexpensive. Metal bodies will always feel more expensive than plastic. Small and Feel are subjective. Again... you are not everyone.

The MotoDroid aint no chick magnet either. Its industrial looks are not for everyone.

Good advice to checkout out a phone before buying, but I think the Inc is a solid upgrade over the MotoDroid.

He said in the beginning of his post that it is his opinion only, so lighten up. This is a review thread and that's what he is providing.

Can any of the awesome reviewers hanging out in this thread give a definite answer as to whether or not this phone has some sort of notification light? I know the N1 uses the trackball and I've seen a lot of phones with a little LED next to the earpiece; what does the Incredible have?

there is indeed a notification LED on the top right of the face by the earpiece.

Good to know, thank you :)

If you don't mind answering a few more questions:
How does the copy/paste functionality differ with Sense? Can you copy and paste text from emails as well as web pages? I really like HTC's implementation, from what I've seen of it, and it's one of the few things I wish vanilla Android would implement.
Does the "Leap" functionality to view all of the homescreens replace the "cards" sort of view on the Nexus One?
Have you had any problems with the optical trackpad? It seems cool, but I'm a bit wary of it vs. a physical trackball.
Can you use applications like HelixLauncher or Home++ with Sense, or does that break things?
Do you feel like the not-as-animated things like the gallery and app menu detract from the experience at all? I keep noticing in videos of the N1 how it sorts of flows between screens with animations like the iPhone, whereas Sense just jumps.
Can you see the "capacitive dots" on the screen, as mentioned in BGR's review at HTC Droid Incredible for Verizon Wireless review ? Boy Genius Report ? Theirs is the only review I've seen that mentions that, but you can clearly see it in their pictures.
How does FriendStream compare to the dedicated Facebbok/Twitter/etc apps?
Is the dictionary user-editable? There have been so many times with my current dumbphone that I wish I could remove a word I accidentally added or never use.
What is your LEAST favorite thing about the phone?

Sorry, I know that's a lot to ask in a review thread, but none of the reviews I've been able to find have touched on smaller things like that.

i don't have the device (yet) the answer was sourced from the instruction manual.

but there are a few other things i can answer from a combination of the manual and having had 2.1 on my former eris.

user dictionary is editable

the leap function does replace the cards from the N1. you can pinch out to see them or if you are on the central home screen, pressing the home button will also do the same thing. on other screens, pressing home will take you back to the central screen.

and from having come from blackberry's and an eris, i welcome the change from a physical ball to an optical pad.

all it's really designed to be used for (in my mind) is precise selection on a web page, or precision editing of text.

I know enough to know that I don't know very much, and am a huge noob........ I guess I thought it would be more like the iphone size. Actually, I thought that the Motorola Droid was more iphone size. I thought it would be wider. It's longer than my Eris, but just as wide. It's just not what I thought it would be. I also thought that this is what this thread was for - to voice OPINIONS

Nothing wrong with your opinion, I was just surprised you were surprised by the screen size.

But anyhow..moving right along, check out the review on Attack of the Show on G4

I can answer these, having had the phone a week now.
1. copy/paste works fine. just touch the word/words you want and little pins come up, allowing you to select the words you want to copy. You can do it from web pages and email. I don't know about texts.
2.Not sure about the N1 home screens, as I've never seen one, but the Incredible's home screens are awesome. I played with mine for several days before I started with a blank slate and customized all of the home screens. One is still blank, so I can add stuff there as I use the phone more. A++ for home screens.
3. The optical trackpad is sweet. Honestly I haven't had much use for it, as the screen is sheer perfection. I've only really used it to move the cursor over one or two letters when my fingers are too big to make those little moves. I really like the optical trackpad though.
4. I know not of Helix
5. I don't miss things I've never had, so the animations and/or transitions that I might be missing do not detract from the experience at all for me. The phone is so freakin fast that I doubt you'll even notice.
6. The capacitive dots are visible when the device is held at a certain angle. In my mind, they're no more noticable than my BlackBerry Storm's were. When the screen is illuminated, they cannot be seen no matter the angle. I saw that review too and was concerned, but then I got the device and I think they exaggerated.
7. Friendstream is cool in that it aggregates facebook and twitter. Not such a big twitter user here, so I'm not using it. I did play with it alot and it is a great widget.
8. Dictionary - this is awesome. When you type a word that isn't in the dictionary, a little pop-up appears that offers the option to add the word to the dictionary. So yes, it is definitely user editable. And in a really good way.

My least favorite thing about the phone is the lack of a consolidated inbox. I really liked that about my BB, and if it is possible with Android I haven't figured it out yet. I have two gmail accounts set up, but I have to toggle between them from within the app by clicking menu/accounts, then selecting the one I want to use. I'd like them to go into the same inbox and use the appropriate account automatically when replying. I'd also like to be able to use different signatures by account.

Besides that, I am absolutely loving this phone!

No consolidated inbox?
No separate sigs for each account?

Am I missing something?
If I have my work acct with the company disclaimer, I can't have a different sig in my gmail account?

Ok so there are some great things about this device so far. But some disappointing issues are Speed? My blackberry storm was 10 times faster than this! I'm not sure what or why that Is but its very upsetting. I tried to connect ti my wireless router to test the speed difference but it keeps disconnecting me from it. And lastly when I upgraded the Google Maps (it was outdated out-of-box) it has taken so far 9 minutes to install.. Still not done.
Oh, and where is Google Earth? Aside of that, Its a pretty intriguing piece of equipment.

This is my second smart phone, had the Eris for two weeks before I returned it.
This phone is uberlicious. Won't give this up until the 4.7" monster comes out or if the VZW iPhone has a freakin' p_$$y. I guess what I'm saying is IMHO VZW finally turned the corner and got something right, not perfect but darn good.

There's something wrong then because I'm coming from the Storm too and this phone is 100 times faster . Just a guess but maybe the SD card is full and that's causing problems? I've read that this phone uses the SD for some phone functions not just media storage, which is why they included one with the phone.

there's something wrong if your Storm is faster than the Incredible.. I've used my gf's Storm 1 before.. my Incredible is 10 times faster then her Storm.

Yeah I had to update Google Maps too this morning.. but I was underground on a subway and wasn't even on 3G and it updated it in about 2 min or so (3mb file it said)
