Incredible, Sense UI

Wow, that's kinda nuts. I wish they could give an option to use Sense or use the standard Android UI. Guess it's back to the Droid for me!

I definately would prefer NOT to use Sense UI. It's why initially I was waiting on the Nexus, as it's a "google experience" phone and does not run with Sense UI. That means faster updates straight from google, and no waiting for HTC to update Sense.

I had a Droid for a bit. It just wasn't for me. I will put up with the quirks and general goofiness of sense, just because of the way they have contact integration set up.

But if you're one who prefers the stock look and feel, the Droid or the Nexus is the perfect choice. Just decide if you want the keyboard or not.
Don;t worry about internal storage, you can set either up to run apps from an SD card if you actually run out of space.
Don't worry about a higher number of mp on a camera with a tiny ass ccd chip.

I see it like this -
Droid= N1 (whenever they get it out!)= Incredible. Decide if you want the keyboard. Decide if you want Sense. None of the three is really going to outperform the others in a practical way.

Great thread guys, as the OP, I'm looking to get rid of my BB Storm and get the Incredible, I don't think I care either way about Sense, seems like a stock ROM would be out soon enough from what you guys are saying.

But, how quick does HTC release ROM updates if I felt the need to keep using Sense?

Another user said you can't turn it off fully - and I've read that Sense will restart everytime you reboot the phone. Is this true?

it really comes down to what you consider "off"

what most people (end users) see as sense, is the launcher and htc widgets, both of which can be turned off, and will make the phone look and feel (for the most part) like it's running stock android 2.1

but there's no way to remove it completely without a custom rom that has it stripped out.

yea, the dialer, calendar, browser.

a lot of the core apps are changed, personally i think for the better, but those are the kinds of things that will remain.

(ie, the sense browser has flash lite, which is a decent stop gap until adobe can finally give us flash 10.1, hopefully sometime before the end of the world)

I am really considering trading my Droid for the Incredible when it comes out. Ive watched videos on the Sense UI and it seems pretty cool. But then again, ive never played with a Sense UI phone. so i dont know what to expect really.

Are these statements accurate?

1. You can disable a majority of Sense UI's components (widgets, etc.) so that everything looks like vanilla Android 2.1.

2. However, even though Sense is disabled, many core components (browser, calendar, and dialer) are changed.

3. You cannot completely change to Vanilla Android 2.1 without a hacked ROM.

If those are all accurate my question becomes: if you go the hacked ROM route to get 2.1 on your phone...

...do you then get the updates to 2.2 (and into the future) when they first come out, or are you still considered on "Sense" and have to wait for VZW/HTC to allow the update to come through (or wait for someone to then hack 2.2 and release a ROM for the Incredible)?

Newbie here. Just trying to get my head around it. I thought the major plus of Android was the freedom that Apple/iPhone does not offer. (Freedom to do whatever you wanted with the phone, essentially.) At first glance it would seem instead of freedom, we're stuck with whatever HTC/VZW allows with Sense.

Would appreciate help in understanding.

I'm seriously not sure what you're trying to say? Are you saying the Droid cpu should have been clocked higher? If so, then why didn't they?

didn't HTC say when they first announced the desire and legend that there would be an option to actually tun off sense in 2.1? As in run the stock android experience. Maybe it will just be one of the scenes, but i have been searching but i am pretty sure it was mentioned in one of the early videos of when sense 2.1 was first debuted and the legend and desire were first announced.

IF you Root and run a cooked ROM you will not get OTA updates which is fine just install the latest ROM of the update you want.

This statement is true and has been confirmed the droid's CPU is capable of much higher clock speeds but they chose 550mhz as a safe battery friendly speed that doesn't turn your phone into a hand warmer lol.

And the Droid's 550 mhz is quite a bit more powerful than that number leads you to believe.
