OK, so we know that Froyo (Android 2.2) is coming sooner rather than later. The poor Motorola folks just received this 2.1 updates. What are the chances that the Incredible's upgrade to 2.2 will take a significant amount of time before it reaches the phone? Do HTC and/or VZW have a record of delaying updates?

I would guess it would be a while before we saw that. Coming from a few Verizon Blackberries in a row, updates don't come fast. Couple that with the fact that Google seems to be taking it's sweet time updating phones with the Sense UI and I'd say the incredible won't be at the front of the list.

Ya, my guess is you are looking at maybe a year, at the very lucky least 6-9 months.

i dont understand why a microsoft can send out updates so frequently, but these phone companies cant do the same.

you think they would want to keep their customers happy.

I just read rumor is nexus. For VZW will b released in may with 2.2.

They could release updates faster. But the vast majority of phone customers would not care to update their phones every week/month or whatever. To MOST people, it is mostly just a phone. We are the exception !

An interesting theory. I've been wondering how VZW is going to handle the HTC Incredible/Nexus for VZW competition. Obviously, if GOOG keeps its phone purchases online-only, then the Nexus for VZW will not do very well (see this article), which will lead to the Incredible being bought by more customers because you can fondle it in the stores.

The only reason this might change is if two things happen: GOOG needs to make the Nexus for VZW actually a Nexus Two, with vastly upgraded features and tech specs; GOOG sells the Nexus for VZW in brick-and-mortar. Without those two things, the Incredible will continue to out pace GOOG, by far.

(This is a sucky risk for those of us who just preordered our Incredibles.)

HTC is absolutely terrible about releasing updates. As soon as their latest and greatest phone hits the market, they are off working on the next bigger and better thing. Case in point: the Hero and Eris folks are still waiting for updates.

HTC is the manufacturer for the hardware. The software is made by Google. And the service is provided by Verizon. To me, it should be on Google to develop the updates for the software and then hand it over to Verizon to distribute those updates. I don't think it should be HTC's responsibility to make updates to a software they don't develop.

HTC puts their own spin on the software and then VZW has to test and approve the software (something they are NOTORIOUSLY slow on). Personally I think the primary hangup is VZW.

Good point threepio. However, I'd still bet that HTC is involved to a certain extent. The OS is still coded to account for specific hardware nuances.

google is responsible for providing the base OS to manuf. but once htc puts sense on it, it's up to them to make sure their version is updated. then they give to vzw for testing.

THEN it gets to us.

i wouldn't hold my breath for 2.2...but maybe htc will surprise us all and start getting more timely in working out updates.

what is most likely going to happen though is 2.2 will come out, and some awesome developers will make a custom rom that has the 2.1 version of sense incorporated into it.

if 2.2 is a huge jump in features, i'd even consider ditching sense and running a custom vanilla 2.2 rom.

If it was me, I would not update any existing phones with new updates. I would just put the updates on the new phones. That way people would buy the new phones to get the update. That way I get more money.

It is sticky business I mean what is Motorola going to release tech is moving around six months for phones

HTC Sense = HTC

so they are doing more than just making the hardware. am i wrong...or are there now three companies that have to work together to release an update (Google + Verizon + HTC)?

Yea you're right. I didnt think about the HTC sense UI. So yea basically an update has three levels to pass through until it could get released to us.

well, even the moto droid's software has to be handled by motorola after being released to them by google to make sure it works with the particular hardware. google (aside from the n1) is very hands off with their OS regarding specific handsets.

however, the work on motorola's end should be rather simple compared to what HTC has to do, which makes how long it took 2.1 r1 to get on the droid kind of ridiculous.

i'm hoping since the inc has virtually identical hardware to the n1, it should make HTC's job fairly simple, coupled with the probable popularity of the device hopefully will mean more frequent updates.

Sadly the sells on the Inc will be small when you compare them to a phone that is selling all over the world. Compare to say the Desire. Now if they make an international version then I would say that the popularity would rise.
Have to remember we are talking about a global maker.
