So I picked up the new version just released and have been tinkering g with it for about 12 hours. Here are my initial thoughts.

Looks. The watch is large on the wrist and thick, but beautiful. I have smaller wrists and it doesn't look bad. I am concerned that it might not fit under the cuff of a dress shirt.

Hardware. The watch is well made and the casing is metal. The watch is only IP67 vs the Gear S2 3g, which is IP68, so don't go jumping into the water with this. The screen is very good, but there is no auto brightness which will be annoying. The buttons cannot be reassigned as of right now so you're stuck with contacts, home, and LG health (top to bottom respectively).

Software. This is android 6.0.1. If you bought this it's for the ability to wear the watch as a standalone and leave your phone at home. So far, this watch proves closer to being able to do that than the Gear S2 3g. Here's why.. first off, the Android wear "ok google" is way better than s voice on the Gear S2. You can ask just about any question and it will give you an answer, albeit an abbreviated one if you ask technical questions. However to leave your phone at home you basically want to be able to get/make calls, texts, emails, and also ask for hours, numbers and directions of businesses. The Urbane appears to do all of this just fine with one caveat - it doesn't always connect to the server. On about one of every three attempts of asking Google to do something, you'll just see the spinning Google circle and it will then say retrying and ultimately say cannot connect or disconnected. Again this only happens on standalone cellular mode and intermittently.

GPS. I wanted to comment on this because of how important this is. It works by golly. The watch GPS on the Gear S2 is terrible, but it appears to be working on the Urbane so long as you are outdoors. Remember GPS is powered by satellites, so being outdoors really helps with your position being detected. So in standalone mode, you'll want to be outside, but it will locate you if you are.

Phone calls. The watch works well for making and taking calls. The built in speaker is plenty loud enough and the other person can hear me ok. Keep in mind you need to be in a fairly quiet location to have an enjoyable experience here.

Battery life. I'm still testing this out but so far so good when you keep in mind these are watches and have small batteries. Having said this, the Urbane has a 570 mAh battery vs the Gear S2 with only 300mAh. The Urbane and android wear consume more battery however. Specs say you'll get 24 hours (on Bluetooth connected), but don't plan on that with standalone cellular. I'm testing that today and so far I'm on part for maybe reaching 8 hours with light to moderate use. Meh, still not great but about the same as the Gear s2.

Early verdict. If google and LG can fix the intermittent issues with the "ok google" not connecting to the server in standalone mode then this watch would get a solid recommend from me. The goal is to leave the phone at home and feel confident that your Urbane can make/take calls, texts, emails, lookup businesses, movie times, find directions, navigate and answer basic questions. With the few hiccups of this not connecting despite showing solid network reception has me giving this watch a lukewarm reception. I'll have to play a bit more before I decide whether to keep or return it.

I'm happy to answer questions. Good luck!

Thanks for the update. Bought the first one last year but swapped out out for the gear s2 which has been underwhelming. Look forward to any more results you find with it. The urbane is a beautiful watch...Look forward to more post.

Thanks rsmin. I have both, went with the Gear S2 3G back in November and put a detailed review of that on their forum. I agree, the Gear S2 3g is underwhelming for two main reasons - s voice and the GPS. Both are terrible. Otherwise the watch is great.

So far I like the Urbane. They need to fix this intermittent connection issue however. I understand this is part of the reason they recalled it in November.

Yeah I wouldn't jump in the water with it either, but since November I have ran with this watch in pouring snow and rain with no problems.

Regarding calls, have you tried using a BT headset to make calls? I read the new version has this capability. Is this confirmed? I have the original release and haven't updated to the new build yet for fear of breaking something.

I haven't tried to pair a Bluetooth headset for calla yet, but I will and report back. Makes sense that this should work.

thanks for the details. do u know if WhatsApp works on cellular?

N5x on Fi Network here

I have not tried this but I read on another thread that it does not. This may have been fixed in android wears most recent update. I really don't use whatsap, so I'm prob not the best to ask. Note that on the Urbane 2 LTE just released that it has android 6.0.1 and android wear 1.5.0.2655648.

mdw1995, good news! The Bluetooth headset worked fine for calls on the Urbane 2 watch when in standalone LTE mode.

Thanks for the update! I just updated my watch a couple of hours ago. I'll be testing the BT calls later today.

Nice review. I'm loving mine, but standalone is more of a side feature for me

Nice review, thanks! Very helpful for those of us who haven't pulled the trigger. Does the watch have any deceased functionality when the phone is turned off? How does Hangouts work on it?

It seems like I have to purchase a dataplan if I buy it at an ATT store (I have not found it available anywhere else in the US)....is the a way around that restriction? I use Tmobile (pre-paid) and do not want to sign up for an ATT dataplan...Thanks for your inputs/suggestions!.

I think you can buy at full price and put on a plan, then cancel the plan. At least that is what I will probably try to do. But that is probably a lot easier to do if you already have a qualified data plan with AT&T. I am sure it will be a bit more expensive when it is available elsewhere, but AT&T figures they are going to get an extra $240 out of people over 2 years for the add on.

Apparently a few people have successfully bought it without service in a store, but none around me will sell it like that. A couple stores even insisted that I couldn't buy it outright, but had to put it on a two year contract for discount price or pay on installment plan.

I'm actually surprised people are having trouble buying it contract free. I'm lucky in that i had no issue whatsoever with doing it that way. Bizarre because that's the whole point of the higher price and it's crystal clear that it's an option so i don't see how stores can even debate it.

You did not have to select a dataplan? They sell it contract free BUT you have to sign up for a monthly dataplan (30$ min per month). How much did you pay, btw?

Because Att is selling for less?

I have no idea. I walked in to ATT in Fort Worth, TX. They only had 1. I told the nice sales rep I wanted to buy the watch outright. We talked a minute about how i bought it in December before the recall. I did tell her i paid $299 before and played dumb a bit as i knew the price went up but why not try to get the discount. 5 minutes later i was out the door. I am on ATT but not on the main account to add the line anyway.

As long as you are an ATT customer, you should be fine because they know most likely you will use it on ATT. What those others complaint about are not ATT customers and have no intention to ever use it on ATT. Remember a lot of AW watches like Huawei sells for $350 without any cellular functions.

Same here, have been wearing it in downpours while running and it was OK. Today, I caught an open jar of olives mid-fall which then spilled all over my wrist. I took off the watch right away and held it under the faucet (because, ewww, it was a jar of black olives and those smell) , then dried it off.
Watch works as always. I love that I did not have to die of a heart attack!

How is the battery life when using GPS and Bluetooth? Thinking of on runs. Could it last 3:30 or no shot? Thanks for the input.
