Initial Price/Price drop?

So I just talked to a rep at ONE of the Verizon stores in my area about upgrading.

He said that they would not be able to give me the discounted price until November at the earliest.

This really really sucks. :( I was really excited for this phone too.

I mean, It's not like I'm trying to get out of a contract with Verizon! I want to EXTEND it! And, with the data plan, I'll be paying even MORE monthly than I am now! WHY ARE THEY SO STUBBORN!?

What a killjoy, damn. :(

keep trying, different managers, different stores. you'll find one that can do it.

where do you generally live?

Pennsylvania (West Chester).

Thanks, I'll keep trying. Would it be worth a shot to try and haggle over the phone also?

yea, it couldn't hurt, and it would save you some gas.

if you don't have any luck at all, i can ask my friend who is a manager what you can do or if he can help you out. but it would have to get shipped to you then, as i'm in southern cali.

I'll try over the phone now.

And, seriously? You're awesome!

Thank you so much, you've been so incredibly helpful.

EDIT:

Well the phone was a no-go. I will try the next store tomorrow.

Wow, I feel really silly. Sorry to waste your time. It dawned on me that I misinterpreted my NE2 date with my contract date. :p

My contract doesn't end until 4/08/11, no wonder the reps were being so stiff. XD

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait for the Incredible 2. :p

(That, or add a second line.)

EDIT:

Just read this on the VZW website:

"You can get a new phone every year with Annual Upgrade. Sign up for a 2-year agreement on a calling plan of at least $49.99 and you can purchase a new phone at its promotional price through My Verizon every year with a 2-year renewal (upgrade fee may apply)."

Does this mean anything for me?

yes, you should be able to sign an extension/new contract at your one year mark and get the phone for 199 (after rebate) but your NE2 credit will reset (thus making it happen in 2012)

i'm surprised that a sales rep didn't mention that to you...

but good news, no? :)

Yes! Very good news!:D

I'm also stumped as to why they didn't think of it.

My excitement has been rekindled, thanks again!

I know I bought the Tour on day one and should have waited a month... Price dropped on that like a rock but then again the phone is junk...

i don't see verizon themselves offering any big discounts on it. the droid is still priced at 199 through them.

maybe some bogo though, they seem to love that promotion

So basically we'll have to pay around 300 up front (with a 2yr contract), then get back 100? Rebates take forever

Lol, they are being very very stubborn.

Well, I asked about the annual upgrade program and they told me that my BASE plan is only $39.99/month and that with added features (texting) it brings it up to $49.99/month and because the base is not $49.99/month they can't go through with the deal.

I talked to a rep who talked a manager about it, he said he could give me one year pricing on the phone (the promotional price plus $70, IIRC) but did not address the annual upgrade. I was also not able to talk to the manager directly.

What's strange, though, is that I called an official Verizon Wireless store and they had absolutely NO CLUE how much the Incredible would cost and when it would be released.

Very strange, I'm going to try some other stores in my area.

EDIT:

Okay this is getting a little ridiculous. Talked to another store, they totally rejected the annual upgrade idea saying they cannot and will not break policy because of the $10.00/month difference.

He then told me that the one-year pricing program (promo price plus $70) was no longer available and that the other rep was wrong in saying that it was an option. ARGH!

Also, they keep writing notes on my account so whenever I call a different location I get this awkward period where they read the notes and wonder why I've called multiple stores. ><

I mentioned that I'd be upgrading to a larger, more expensive plan AND extending my plan when buying this phone. All I got was something along the lines of "Yeah man, we really want to sell you this phone, but we can't break the policy." Are these policies really that inflexible?

yes, you'll pay 300+tax (which in CA is based on the full retail price, so your out the door cost is around 350) and then get $100 back on a card which can be spent like a debit card or used towards your bill.

the rebate process has gotten much better. the past few i've sent in were back to me in a month or so

yea, adding features to your plan doesn't make a new contract.

as for vzw mandating the lowest price, you can buy a moto droid for $20 on amazon if you sign a new contract, which is quite a bit lower than what it would run doing the same thing at the vzw store.

my pricing bet is still going to be 199 after $100 rebate (new contract)

and we might see a drop of $50 on the droid, but i'm kind of doubting it.

You can get it for that price because Verizon no longer mandates the Minimum advertised price. They only do this for the first month/first few months. when the Droid launched, EVERYWHERE had it for 199 (either with or without rebate)

features do not count towards your annual upgrade pricing because they can be added and removed without changing your plan at all.

If you had the base 39.99 plan and had unlimited texting (59.99) you could get the annual price because unlimited texting is considered part of the plan not a feature.

Verizon isn't doing exception upgrades as much anymore because people were seriously abusing the system. (the biggest one was working out an exception upgrade and then selling off the new phone, meaning no net income for verizon) so they standardized what an upgrade needed and went with that.

It used to be any plan 69.99 or higher, but they dropped it recently so basic single line select plans qualify. So it is EASIER to get an annual upgrade now, just harder to get an exception upgrade.

They did end the 1yr pricing lost/stolen/broken phone upgrade option, which is what that one store was talking about.

I suggest talking to your local store manager and finding out how long you would have to be on the higher priced plan (talk&text, or 900 minutes would work) before you get the upgrade. it could be as little as three months (which is still a long time, but better than 2 years).

You have to understand that WHENEVER a rep makes an exception upgrade, or pushes an update through early, they need to justify it to their higher ups. And since everything is tighter, reps/managers are a lot less willing to put their jobs on the line, especially for a sale that might make them negative profit (if they push through an exception but verizon doesn't approve of it, that rep earns no commission and they are out the cost of the phone and possibly a job if they do it too often)
