Installing TWRP Recovery and selecting the correct partition...

Hey guys. Not new to rooting, but this is my first time rooting a Samsung device. From what I understand, it's like peeling back layers on an onion compared to other devices.

Anywho, I've been reading tons of tutorials/guides and they've all pointed me to using 'GooManager' for installing TWRP custom recovery. When searching for it in the Play Store, I only found TWRP Root Manager (which I'm assuming is the updated version).

When installing, the system has the following message: "Ensure the partition listed below is the correct one for your device." It lists '/dev/block/mmcblk0p21'. How do I confirm this is the correct destination? After I selected 'Yes', it stated that the recovery was installed successfully. Then it was supposed to reboot into recovery mode. Instead it rebooted into Odin mode for which I had to finagle to get out of.

After going back into TWRP Root Manager it still says it is not installed.

What am I doing wrong? Is the destination I selected wrong?

Are you sure you pressed the power, home button and volume UP button?

Note that pressing the power, home and volume DOWN button will put the device in Download mode.

Yeah, I just followed the prompt to 'Reboot to Recovery'. I didn't use a button-combo to do it myself. It just boots into Odin mode automatically.

Is your device already rooted?

If yes, download Rashr from the Play Store and flash TWRP from there.

If not, try an app called "Towelroot" to root your device first before flashing a custom recovery.

Yeah, I rooted it with TowelRoot v3. TWRP says that it's installed, but when I attempt to boot into recovery mode (either through TWRP Root Manager or by using 'VOLUME UP+HOME+POWER' combo) it just goes into Odin mode. It's bypassing the actual recovery mode.

I appreciate your Rashr suggestion, but it seems like TWRP is already flashed. I need to figure out this recovery mode issue before I proceed with flashing the CM12 nightly ROM (the whole purpose of this dilemma).

Flash ClockworkMod using Rashr over TWRP, then reboot into recovery. If it works, reboot into the ROM, flash TWRP over CWM and try again. If it works, congratulations! Perform a NANDroid backup in case anything goes wrong and you are free to flash CM12. Something tells me your recovery might not be flashed properly.

I have CM12 on my S3 and it's pretty good, minus some minor Lollipop hiccups.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of the stock TAR for KitKat 4.4.2? I desperately need it to flash over the root kernel I flashed (which was needed to run TowelRoot v3). This root kernel is seemingly keeping me from turning on Wi-Fi altogether.

When attempting to search far and wide for this stock kernel I keep running into the same issues:
1) Find it, but it takes 5+ hours to download using the "slow connection" option
2) Downloading the stock TAR kernel ultimately fails everytime after 1.5 hours

It's a vicious circle that I've been running ALL weekend long. If anyone happens to have a link they can inbox me to a filehosting site with decent speeds, it'd be much appreciated.

Your best bet is probably going onto SamMobile and downloading the stock firmware for your device.

Then, put it into download mode and flash it via ODIN. It might erase all your data, so do back everything up before doing so.

It restores the stock kernel as well.

Yeah so after forever and a day I figured out that the NC5 kernel is patched so tight that custom recoveries (CWM, TWRP) can't work on it. Anything after the MDK release has the patch. Because the recoveries can't be downloaded--I can't flash any Cyanogenmod ROMs. Fun...

So did you figure out how to do this. I am on NC5 as well and just want to be on cyanogenmod.

I am SO done with Samsung crap...I really want S6...but will just not buy Samsung product anymore.

Yeah, so the short version is: if you're on NC5--you're screwed.

Long version: Because the bootloader is locked tighter than Fort Knox (get the pun?) anyone on NC5 can only use Safestrap custom recovery. Safestrap cannot be used with Cyanogenmod ROMs--only Clockwork Mod or TWRP recoveries.

Unfortunately no one seems to have a method of downgrading the kernel from NC5 to MDK. I've searched... MDK users can exploit the bootloader via Loki, and ultimately use CWM or TWRP to flash the CM12 glory.

Again...those on NC5 are screwed.
