I've seen many posts in multiple threads from people expressing concern/frustration regarding not being able to rotate their Nexus 7 into landscape mode while in various apps. But don't worry all, you can! It's just that by default, the rotation lock is turned on. Here is the quick and easy process that will allow you to disable and enable your rotation lock whenever you want without any hassle.

NOTE: The stock Android launcher on the Nexus 7 only supports portrait mode regardless of your lock settings. Disabling the rotation lock will allow you to rotate any application that supports it such as Chrome or Gmail. If an application does not rotate when the lock is disabled, it is most likely due to it not supporting landscape mode.

1. Pull down your notification bar.

2. In the top of your notification bar, you will see a rotation lock button which I have displayed below. Click the button to set it to your desired setting.

3. Enjoy!

Before anyone gets upset the main screens will not rotate even with it unlocked. This is a quick great way to unlock or lock the screen for other apps and the browser. Nice and easy how to here. Thanks!

Edited to reflect that. I meant to mention that and forgot. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. For some reason, however, no such icon appeared in the notification area until I found advice from someone else. Go to Settings/Accessibility/Auto-rotate screen and click on it to make the check mark appear.

Thanks a million, menaut! I too did not have a shortcut to the orientation lock in the notifications area. Digging down into the accessibility settings worked for me as well!

On 4.2 the main screen now can rotate to Landscape.

On Jellybean 4.2.1, the rotation lock has completely disappeared. I no longer see any way to disable rotation. Rotation can be really inconvenient at times. Is the rotation lock still available?

I still have rotation lock on my 4.2.1. Are you completely stock?
