OK finally ready to take the plunge and root and am looking for the best instructions for rooting my incredible and some suggestions for roms to load.

Best Rooting Instrucitons I have read, theese are the ones I followed. Make sure you don't skip the nandroid backup step! I would highly recomend titanium backup as well. As far as roms go, get rom manager and go for some test drives. BACK UP EVERYTHING!!! If you load one that's not working for you, you can restore through rom manager and it's like you never left.

When switching from ROM to ROM, make sure you check backup and also check wipe cache and data in ROM Manager. Plenty of issues can be averted by doing the wipes. Clean installs work best. If you are upgrading to a newer version of a rom, you can try it without doing the data wipe but ALWAYS do a backup of what you are coming from if you think you might want to go back.
Also, do not install or restore your apps before doing some testing...especially if you are planning on also installing a non stock kernel. Too many times I have restored all my apps and had to change kernels or revert to nandroid backups after discovering I didn't like a ROM or I got stuck in boot loops. It is best to restore apps after you decide whether you like the ROM or not. It won't save you every time, but it will cut down on the number of times you click install.
One last tip. Keep a log somewhere of which nandroid backups belong to which ROM, it sucks restoring something only to find out that wasn't the one you wanted restored.

if you're on windows, you'll need the drivers installed before you get started. Anything else, it's self contained and should be plug-in and click.

Don't overthink it. That's what I did, and it kept me from rooting for about a week. Trust me, it is incredibly simple. Go for it; you'll be glad you did.
Also, I recommend Virtuous as a ROM, if you're interested in that. You going to want to purchase ROM Manager off the Market, as well.

Actually it is easier than that. When I rooted, it was accidental. I just wanted to see what the steps were as i was procrastinating the move. I ran the app just as the house phone rang. I walked over to answer the phone, figuring I would get a prompt to continue or something. By the time I got back to the pc and phone...it was rooted.

So when updating the Kernel do you just flash it from the .zip file like when instaling ROMS?

Well there is the possibility that it won't work that easily. Tried rooting my brothers incredible today with unrevoked and it hangs up on the reboot. Its like the drivers didn't take. We loaded and unloaded sync first too.
Mine hung up as well and read somewhere that you may need to reboot device to get drivers to take. Other than that it was really easy now to figure out exactly what I want on my phone.
unrevoked after I loaded the drivers to my phone, that was when it hung up, and someone had written that if it did hang looking for drivers to disconnect and reboot phone. Then the drivers showed up and I plugged back in and ran unrevoked. Came back to my pc about 20 minutes later it was done.
