Internal memory only shows 8gb

I check the internal storage on my bionic and noticed only 8gb of internal storage and about 5gb of available storage. I called verizon and was told the system uses up about 8gs of memory. However the phone never shows that 16gb is available on the phone. So before I reinstall any apps I currently have about 5gb of available memory. I know you can transfer some apps to the sd card but something is not right here. Why advertise 16g and the phone only shows 8?

16GB total of internal. A good chunk is used by the phone for applications.

Yeah mine has 8GB free from internal + the 5 GBs or so left for applications space for the internal memory.

Another 16GB is from the SD card.

I understand that but 8g seems like an awful lot of memory being used for the os and applications.

Not sure about the 'internal' storage, but I know on some SD Cards a 16gb SD Card will only end up being somewhere around 14.5gb of usable space. If you have 8gb of available 'user' storage that'd leave you 6+ for reserved system stuff, which is likely where the Operating System, internal apps, bloatware, etc... live.

Aren't you also angry when you buy a 40gb hard drive (example) and then you see you only have about 28gb free on a brand new computer? gosh.. where'd it go... well, the Operating System, page file, etc... which is most likely just hidden from you for safety sake on Android.

There is indeed 16GB internal where 8GB is setup for the application and 8GB for normal usage. You also need to understand that Webtop is a 2nd OS you have installed on your device.

I was wondering about this too.. When I was looking through the settings for memory, it said Internal - TOTAL: 8gb.. I guess it's not even displaying the memory that is reserved for the system or?

So we have 22G instead of 32 then.

And apparently there is a bug where if you have applications not on the phone memory they will uninstall. So all of the apps have to be on the phone...

8GB of free internal space
4GB is set aside for application install (partition)
4GB is used by OS

total 16GB

It's not that big of a deal, it's like buying a big hard drive for a PC and losing a good amount of it to installing the Windows OS. But this is more like installing Windows and Linux at the same time. And I would have rather seen the app space just be a part of the actual space, so we get most of that space for not only music and videos, but apps as well. Means I'll have 8GB of space that is ONLY available to videos, music, etc, while if for some strange reason I fill up my 16GB card with a lot of stuff, I don't have an extra 8GB of space I could've used.
Not horrible, but it's not a perfect system. But if you root it, I guess you could change all this around.

Hi there,

Bionic's storage system sucks !!!!! Bionic does carry a total of 16GB of Internal Memories with 16GB SD Card. Now, there are 3 partitions made for this phone. (2) 8GB partitions and 16GB of SD Card. First partition is a mere 4 GB not much for a powerful phone. App2SD is invalid now, for every apps you move will be transferred to 8GB internal storage. If you connect the phone via USB for any reason, then you will get invalid apps in your phone as not all apps installed back quick enough. I also used ADW Launcher and restarting the launcher no longer works to recapture the apps back like in my OG droid. 4GB for apps is not much compared to the advertised 16GB is true, but compared to my 256MB memory from my OG Droid... well it is more than enough. 8GB internal memory is good for Media, pictures, documents, saved datas, and etc... while the 16GB SD card is good for medias, picture, and documents.

Actually it's 4G on the phone. 8 Gig on the sd-ext card which is for media. And 16 Gig for the SD card.

You need to keep apps on the phone or sd card. Mine defaults to loading apps on the sd-ext which is why apps vanish.

Ok here's the real scoop:

There was never and never will be a Droid Bionic 8GB
There are two types: 16GB internal(no sdcard) and 32GB(16 internal/16sdcard)

On both of these it shows only 8GB available internally. That is because the other 8gb is dedicated to "the system resources".

some say that VZW is calling some of these the "Bionic 2" well it's not and that's rubbish.
Good ole VZW.

Thanks for listening...and I apologize if I am redundant with my post.

:)
