My 'internal memory widget' shows a reading of: "Used up 104mb out of 748mb"

Shouldn't is say, "...out of 6.6gb"???

Memory and storage are 2 different things. The 6.6GB is your available storage. The 748MB is your available memory (RAM)

yea, they partitioned the internal storage,

6.6GB is for storing personal stuff (music, pictures, files, whatever)

748mb is for the system, so installing apps, where the os lives, etc.

Wow, i can't believe how dumb i am, and that i finally fell into the category of illiterate people who don't know the difference b/w memory and device storage; LOL. i just had a serious brain fart.

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up.

Ok so we have 6.6GB of internal memory for photo's music etc, we have 748MB of internal memory for the OS (and where you install apps)?. The 512MB is for what then, running apps?

I ask this because I d/l about 63 apps from AppBrain.com synced to my Incredible and based on the total memory needed was 84MB. So I have 505 contacts, Gmail and Exchange mail (but I keep the inbox for both cleaned up) How much memory should I really have left over?

To clarify:

6.6 GB Onboard Storage (music, pics, etc.)
748 ROM (where the OS and Apps are installed)
512 RAM (device memory, does the work of running the apps)

@ Raptor

How many messages you have in your gmail or exchange mailbox is irrelivant because they phone only keeps copies of a specified number (200??) of them on the phone and then calls for the reas as needed. Contacs take up very littme memory.

I really would not worry too much about memory, you should have tons left. AppBrain numbers are estemates and don't account for any data that they apps themselves save (cache). I'm guessing you should still have 450-500 or so of your 748 ROM left. Remember you have to account for the Android OS itself too.

Thank you VZWRocks I appreciate the info so even with everything I d/l I should have tons of space and did remove the task killer app and will let Android do what it does best JUST RUN like the WIND.

Of course with Froyo coming up, you will be able to save apps to your SD card thus giving you almost unlimited memory

Assuming the feature made it into Froyo. Google said it was coming but not what release it would be in.

Everyone is all gaga for this feature but remember (and I can attest to this since I have done it on BB) that apps installed on the SD card are a lot slower than the ones installed in native memory (ROM)

Not always true it depends on how the hardware manufacturer setup the memory addressing lanes on the motherboard for the phone between processor and sd reader. And it depends on what class card you put in there. It will be slower regardless but most people won't ever notice it unless it's a huge app like some of the games out there. Personally if you need more than 748Mb of room with the types of apps we have now you got issues lol.

Yeah but most people will put the larger apps on the SD card ;-)

I have almost all of the apps on my Incredible that I had om my Droid and I sitll have over 500 mb free, so yeah I agree that it is more than enough space for most people.

Yeah opps an over-site on my part lol. So far I haven't had an issue with the memory amount on my phone. I've got every app under the sun I find useful including some that are just goofy or fun games and I still have about 600mb left. I use my SD card for podcasts, video, pictures, and music.

Same here. I had the problem with my Moto Droid but Incredible still has 2/3 of the app space free and I save everything on the SD as well unless needed on the phone.
