When I import a picture from the cloud ( Google+ photos ) and set it as my wallpaper, I can see internal storage used up by the same amount in mb as the picture. I understand that part. What I don't get, is when I switch back to a pre-installed wallpaper and remove the imported pic, storage is not reduced. Is there a way to clear that wallpaper cache?

It is probably being stored as a system cache. You can clear cache in recovery. Use this: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...e-nexus-7-2012-2013-cache-partition-wipe.html

I followed that excellent writeup and that did it! That is one to remember. Thank you!

No sweat. Good thing to do once in a while. I do that once a month and after any updates.
