In the security tab of my google account/devices-my ip is showing as 30mins away from my home address on my phone. Even when travelling for work 1.5hrs away, the ip doesn’t change. Can anyone explain this? Thankyou
A quick search turned up this result from Google's Gemini;
If Google Android shows your IP address as not being at your current location, it's likely because the geolocation data associated with your IP address is inaccurate, meaning the database Google uses to pinpoint your location based on your IP is not correctly reflecting your actual physical address; this can happen due to factors like your ISP providing incorrect location information or using a VPN that routes your connection through a different location. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key reasons why your location might be inaccurate on Google Android: [1, 2, 3]
Outdated Geolocation Data: The databases used to map IP addresses to locations might not be updated with the latest information, leading to discrepancies. [1, 2, 3]
Shared IP Address: If multiple users share the same IP address from their internet provider, Google might attribute the location based on the majority of devices using that IP, not necessarily your exact location. [1, 3, 4]
VPN Usage: Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can mask your actual location by routing your internet traffic through a different server, causing Google to display the location of the VPN server instead of your physical location. [2, 3]
Incorrect Location Settings: Double-check your device's location settings to ensure they are properly configured to use your current location. [5, 6, 7]
Check your IP address: Use a website like "whatismyip.com" to verify your current IP address and compare it to the location Google is displaying. [1, 2, 3]
Check your VPN settings: If you are using a VPN, try disabling it to see if your location updates correctly. [2, 3]
Restart your device: Sometimes a simple restart can refresh location services on your device. [5, 6, 7]
Clear cache and data: Clear the cache and data for Google services on your device to potentially resolve location issues. [4, 6, 7]
Contact your ISP: If you suspect your ISP is providing inaccurate location data, reach out to their customer support to check if there is an issue with their geolocation information. [3, 4]
