iPad 2 shames xoom in graphics

I went to the Verizon store and played with both the iPad2 and XOOM, the samsung tab was a joke sitting next to the XOOM. I found the XOOM to be be far more responsive and the screen to be better overall. I found zero lag in opening and running games on the XOOM.

i didnt experience that. i played with a xoom at my local best buy and it was very laggy. rebooted it, hoping that it will fix the problem but it didnt. my friend just picked up one and will check it out more thoroughly tomorrow before i decide to buy one.

I own a XOOM and I decided to play with the best buy display model when i was there just to see how bad people can destroy things. It was disgusting, there was a coke spilled all around/over it and the homescreens had apps everywhere, it was lagged to the max. I wouldnt consider a best buy display a fair assessment at all.

thats what ive figured. i checked it out last night and also played with the ipad 2 that was on display. it was a night and day difference. the ipad was so smooth in every app and web browsing.

i actually did notice a whole bunch of stuff on the homescreen. figured it wasnt a good unit to judge its performance on. people did key(scratch) the hell out of the back lol

I just don't buy stuff like this AT ALL. My XOOM is super fast and can run some pretty graphics intensive games. If the iPad 2 was really that much faster then Apple would have been demo-ing PS2 quality games on it. Apple would be the first to show off what the device can do and all of you know it. However, the Tegra 2 devices are the ones that will be receiving Playstation games and games made using Unreal Engine, not the iPad 2. Test results be damned, I'll make my judgement when they compare the same games running on the iPad 2 and the XOOM, which still isnt really fair since the XOOM will likely have things running in the background.

Just got my ipad 2 today. Been playing games on it all day. Runs great, looks great. Its obvious developers are putting alot of time and effort into their games and it will only get better. Ipad 2 will be alot of fun for playing games.

That said I'm writing this message with my keyboard to you guys, switching back and forth to music with ease. I have a Google Talk convo going in the background. with about four tabs on my broswer going, with flash on. I'm trying to find all this stutterings and lag every one is talking about.

So... to find it i turn on Gun Bros. Switch back to GTalk, pull up a few more apps. Every things running pretty good Did crash the browser once.

Cant do any of that on my Ipad 2... But I WILL still enjoy playing somes games on muh pad. But my Xoom will continue to stay with me all day long, to work and back.

For some reason, I was trying to download GLBenchmark 2.0 for my n1 and it says it's not supported, then I was looking for the XOOM download and it is also not supported. So they hacked the software to run the Benchmark?

I just got it from their site. I had to sign up for a free membership to see my results though. The app had to be side loaded.

This is why a most stores that sell computers password lock all their devices. You need to have a store rep unlock it for you and they make sure you don't install crapware on their systems.

Same goes for TV's. Even though you go to the store to look at the TV's, you can't go by what's displayed as the adjustments have been played with way to much by people not knowing what the hell they do. Some manufactures have taken it a step where they place it in "display" mode and at a preset time, it will reset all the settings back to default.

What is there to "buy"? Anandtech.com is a trusted source for testing, and no one said anything about that Xoom not being able to run some great games.
This is about the fact that PowerVR SGX543MP2 is a monster GPU, and it will be great to get it in an Android Tablet.

Just like with Tegra 2 Honeycomb tablets, games are currently in the works for iPad 2. In fact, check out the updated version of Infinity Blade (from EPIC) for iPad 2, it looks amazing.

As far the Unreal Engine 3, it was ported to iOS first before Android, and runs great.

Did you even read the Anandtech.com review. They did have games for both platforms...

I think I'd like GL Benchmark updated to at least read the Xoom's screen resolution properly before putting too much stock in to the test results.

It's not reading the resolution wrong, It's reading the resolution available to apps, which doesn't include the Honeycomb menu bar.

That's a good call and you're 100% right, I just verified the honeycomb menu bar is 48 pixels high which is the difference that GL Benchmark takes in to account in reporting the 1280x752 resolution.

Still, the 6 OpenGL libraries that the app didn't use is probably even of a great concern of the validity of the test.

I look it at like this, if the Xoom had an 8 cylinder engine the test only used 6 cylinder and then compared it to an 8 cylinder engine firing on all cylinders.

Yeah I agree that the benchmark not using all of the libraries is a concern, but I also wouldn't be surprised that the iPad 2 is quite a bit beefier in the graphics department. I also wouldn't care that much because I don't expect to play games more than casually, and the Xoom outputs video just as well as the iPad 2.

I hear you - I actually really want a Galaxy S2, so it's OK if that gpu is awesome for me lol.

Though, I mean Nvidia knows OpenGL so for any benchmark I just want to be sure that it's using all of the nvidia openGL goodies baked in.

And Xoom Shames iPad2 for CPU

If the latest report is corrent, iPad 2 only has two 0.9Ghz cores CPU, right?

With a faster CPU, you get almost everything faster. With a faster GPU, you only get games running faster.

But seriously, if you need good quality on game graphics, why would you play on a mobile device if you can afford so many good gaming devices on the market?

All the benchmarks in the world are rather pointless whenyour comparing two entirely different OS`s. Both sytems have there own set of restrictions and bonuses. It simply comes down to which you enjoy to use. I own both the Xoom and the iPad2 and each one does certain things well.

The iPad with all the apps ive acumulated over the past year is a great entertainment device. The Xoom is my primary web surfing tablet since i absolutly love the quick menu and the voice search funtions.

The Xoom cameras clearly are better on paper, yet the iPads front facing camera works well and is a crisp pic when using facetime. The Xooms plusses aside fromjust megapixels is the awsome dual Led flash, digital zoom and the numerous options built in the camera app.

If/when the Android market gains some apps the Xoom could very well take over as my primary tablet. :-) i love the fact i can upgrade to LTE this fall for free.

My wife and family still love the ipad because its familaiar and easy to use, we have tons of apps on it and no questions about how to do anything. I on the other hand enjoy learning about new tech and as this is my first Android tablet im loving all the options the OS and hardware bring to the tablet. Not buying Apples overpriced accesories when i can simply plug in my $5 micro HDMI to HDMI cable and go.

To each their own, people should stop worrying about whats on some benchmark and start enjoying the great technology thats available.

I guess I should believe everything I read on the internet without question, right?

And what makes them a "trusted source" as you've mentioned in both of your 2 posts on this forum? Is it the same things that make Engadget a "trusted source"? Because Endgadget frequently portrays Android in a negative light while putting Apple on a pedestal, and many people would consider them a "trusted source".

Hopefully those days are gone now that 4 of 6 editors left Engagdet...... miss the Ryan block days lol...

It's strange that the iPad2 beat out the Xoom in the review--with less ram. Could it be that the reason is that Honeycomb is not fully optimized for the Xoom's hardware features yet?

If the issue is simply that its not optimized, then these test results are more or less temporary.

It could also meant that the Benchmark software is not optimized for the hardware/software combination. Unlike iPad2, the software on the XOOM is brand new.

If you read other hardware benchmark articles from Anadtech or Tomshardware, then you know when they do test hardware specs, they setup the system exactly the same way except the part that they want to test, they install the same software and benchmark tools. nVidia and ATI have been going at it for a long time, but sometimes the test results will mention that the driver for certain graphics card is not toned or that sometimes the specific hardware is toned to score higher on the benchmark. GLbenchmark might be fall into this case, meaning Apple toned their hardware software for this benchmark software so it could score higher. It's certainly possible.

When testing graphics card, Anadtech and Tomshardware also test the system setups under the same graphics settings, it's not like that for this test. The iPad and iPad2 are tested under the same setting but since XOOM is different, so it really doesn't give real comparative data. 1024x768 and 1280x800 might not be that much different, but it could mean adding a huge amount of computing cycle to the processor or not. Unless Apple can give an 1280x800 model to test with, this comparison is not justified.

Finally, the real world application might be the last thing that we can use to compare these two product's performance. We really need to have a game that optimized for both iPad2 and XOOM to see what really happens.

And yes, I will be getting a XOOM wifi on 3/27. :)
