I found a pair in my house and I use them from time to time to listen to music but when I plug them in my phone doesn't read them as a headset and I wish they would (yesterday I noticed my phone did read them as a headset) Is there an option where I can make the phone read it as a headset all the time?

I'm assuming that by "read them as a headset" you mean have microphone capabilities?

There's nothing "magical" about the iPhone headset earbuds, they are a standard 4-way 3.5" TRRS plug (stereo plus mic)...at least as far as I'm aware. You should notice the 3 black lines on the jack itself -- when looking at a jack, 1 black line = mono, 2 black lines = stereo (or mono+mic) and 3 black lines = stereo + mic. The black lines essentially separate the different contact points on the jack, so if the jack isn't fully inserted into the phone, those contact points may not be lined up correctly, and thus the headphones may not function as designed.

My guess is that if your phone doesn't "read" the earphones as a headset, that either the jack isn't fully inserted into the phone (sometimes it does take a little extra push), or that the headphones you're using are faulty. As long as all of the contacts are made, you should have full stereo and mic with any 4-way TRRS plug. Of course, if you have problems with other headsets, it could be the phone itself that has a problem. As far as I know, you shouldn't have "do" anything to get it work -- the device should automatically recognize the headphone type when you insert it.

still didn't read it after i gave it an extra push :(

Wired phone headsets are pretty cheap. It might be worth picking one up and trying it. I use the wired stereo headset/mic that came with my BlackBerry 9300 and it works wonderfully. I've also used standard stereo (non-mic) headsets and they've worked great.

If you plug in a headset/mic, you should get a little icon that looks like a headset with a microphone, and the phone should switch automatically to it. If you plug in a regular headset, you get an icon that looks like a thicker set of headphones with no mic, and again the phone should just start using it.

If nothing works, your phone is defective - and it may be a warranty repair (not sure). If other headsets work, then the iPhone one you are trying to use is incompatible with your phone. Or broken.

I know that iPhone/iPod wired headsets frequenly have more buttons on them, and even though they do use the standard 4-pin connector they don't always work with other phones because they send different control signals to differentiate the 3-4 controls (where the standard rig only has one control and simply shorts out a couple of connectors to send the "hey! I need your attention!" signal.)

I gave some cool Bob Marley headfones to my lil bro and they have a Mic built in and the mic wot work with his mytouch 4g. U think it might be the headfones? I know some headfones work and some don't.
