iPhone VZW??? Not looking good...

That's true, but there have also been several recent reports that Apple is ramping up production of a CDMA iPhone and is on course to have millions ready for a possible Q1 2011 launch.

Is it possible that we're all a bit blinded and only think Big Red when we see CDMA?

Is it possible that it'll actually be Sprint that dives into the iPhone pond?

That would be interesting, or they are playing the super tricky card and possibly designing a slightly different phone that won't be called an iPhone, so as to not violate exclusivity with AT&T. It would be just different enough to be considered a new phone...lol That is complete speculation and conjecture though.

The new Verizon vPhone from Apple...lol

Verizon will not be getting the Iphone 4 anytime soon people need to get realistic.

The only reason Apple was making all these CDMA phones was so they could sell them in China which just announced they will be selling the Iphone 4 very soon.

I dont know why soon as everyone heard CDMA iphone they automatically jump and say oh verizon is getting it.

CDMA is not only in America. China along with many South American countries run on CDMA networks so people need to stop jumping the gun.

I hear ya, I just hink people want it bad but not bad enough to switch carriers...

I know my Dad will just have to keep waiting, yet I try all the time to convinve him on the droid b showing what my DInc can do...

PLEASE don't come to Sprint. I hate the iPhone and the rampaging it does on the data packages. Good-bye unlimited data and hello crappy service if that happens. Verizon could probably handle it, but I don't think Sprint could. And yes, there are many countries worldwide with cdma.

or maybe the iphone can stay where it is cause compared to android it sux some of the apps are ok but other than that the phone is out dated in my opinion.

My opinion on the iPhone is changing greatly. While I do admit that I was always a bit envious of not being able to have one (since I like Sprint), that envy is going by the wayside lately. The OS itself is boring. Hey look, I can change wallpaper now...woots for that!, but aside from that, you turn the thing on and and you're faced with a wall of icons for your apps. How great is that? I like the customizability of Android with it's 7 home screens way better. Sure the iPhone has a plethora of great apps, but Android is catching up fast, and with all the great hardware coming from HTC, Samsung, Qualcomm, etc.... the iPhone no longer is the superior power house that other phones have to look up to.

Would I have been excited if the iPhone would have come to Verizon, or Sprint for that matter a couple of years ago? Sure! Do I care now? Nope, not the least bit. I like my 4.3" screen, I like my customizability, and I know things will just get better as both Android OS and the hardware it is running on is just getting better and better.

I'm honestly hoping they don't get a deal done. Verizon has done wonders for the Android community. They would market the Hell out of a Verizon iPhone and while some may prefer Android it would defiantly lose some momentum forcing the other carriers to step up majorly. Think if Verizon never pimiped the og Droid would Sprint took a chance on the evo? Besides that think of the congestion an iPhone would bring to big red. I know its about money but no can seriously think that and Verizon iPhone wouldn't slow androids growth on Verizon.

well said. :)

i love my fascinate.

I agreed with your entire post but the beginning made me lol. :) So true!

+1 I'll never go back to the iPhone! I'll give props to Apple for their Retna display, but that's it. The OS is boring. The hardware is limited. Look at all of the choices you have with Android. And the apps are getting better each day!

I go through these forums and see the long list of Android devices. All these phones competing against one iPhone and the iPhone still has a larger market share. And most importantly, Apple has 40% of the smartphone profitshare. When it finally lands on Verizon, it's gonna eat Androids lunch. It will slow Androids phenomenal growth. All that talk about a customizable UI is gonna mean nothing. It's the customer experience that really matters and Apple has that mastered.

You also have to look at the demographic of people buying the iPhone and how long it has been out already. For all intends and purposes, Android didn't really start taking off until last year when the original Droid came out. Before that, we had one phone, on the smallest carrier, T-mobile, followed by some mediocre phones on Sprint like the Samsung Moment and the Hero. None of those phones could hold the candle as far as hardware goes compared to the new generation of super smart phones that got their genesis with the Droid. In this rather short year, the growth of Android was enormous, more so than the growth of the original iPhone, and there was lots of hype and marketing behind it. Who buys iPhones now? People that have been buying iPhones all along. For the longest time there was no true competition to the iPhone because the Pre was hindered by horrible dev support and crappy hardware, along with a company betting the farm on one phone. The early Android phones didn't have the hardware power to go toe to toe with the iPhone, and it was only after the Droid came out that Android got much more media and public attention. There is a reason why people don't know what Android is and only know what a Droid is, Verizon did a great job marketing it, unlike Palm and Sprint did for the Pre.

Once the iPhone comes to Verizon, there might be a lot of current iPhone users switching carriers, but, will there really be a whole lot of people that are on Verizon right now ditch their current phone for an iPhone? I kinda doubt it. Blackberry fans are pretty hardcore, but seing how poor it does in the gaming and media department, I would say that they might be the biggest group of people switching to the fruit phone. I doubt that many people carrying a current generation Android phone will ditch it for the iPhone. I mean, really, what's better still on the iPhone compared to Android?? Gaming! And that won't stay like that for very long, considering the rapid development in Android itself, the growing developer support who are tired of having their app denied by Apple or having it drown in the hundreds of thousands of apps in the App Store. If you really have to have a certain game in your pocket, you can always buy an iPod touch. Also, WP7 is joining the party now, and in my opinion, it's looking pretty good.

The days of a carrier making money hand over fist just because they carry the iPhone now are over. The competition is much stronger and getting stronger month by month.

Whatever it may be, the consumer definitely wins. The days where you had to sign your life away to the Evil Empire, and the Fruit Company they're in bed with, are over. Can you smell the freedom of choice.....sniff sniff....I can!

Worldwide the iPhone outsells Android devices 4:1 when they're on the same network. Here at home, there is pent up demand for it on other carriers and research shows some 17-40% of Verizon users want the iPhone. It will definitely have an effect on every current device sold by Verizon. Coupled with the iPad and it's clear who the likely winner will be. iPhone also has the highest loyalty with some 80% repeat buyers. The rest are new or from other platforms. This is good and shows that, not only are they selling extremely well, but more people are sticking with it. It's not the same for Android, I believe only 26% remain loyal.

Apple still provides the best ownership experience with now over 300,000 apps on the App store with over 94,000 free. More than the total reported apps in the Android marketplace and developers make more money in the App store. Then there's iTunes store with music, movies and TV shows to rent and own, podcasts, iTunes university, audio books, the new iBook store and Game center. This is all part of the iPhone out of the box.

The iPhone with it's Retina display is unmatched. The smoothness and polish of iOS is unmatched. The engineering and hardware design of the iPhone is unmatched. The focus on the customer is unmatched. Android is largely successful in the U.S. because the iPhone is only available on AT&T, but that's about to change and that spells BIG trouble for Android. I personally think we'll see a dramatic fall off in Android gains. Think about it, who's going to buy an Android device when they can get the iPhone and the iPad?

The new Windows Phone 7... Hmm, we've seen what a big success the Zune and Zune marketplace have been, huh?

Yeah...that hardware engineering really paid off on the iPhone 4..... No doubt it is a well made device, but really, Apple is awfully busy blowing their own horn about how good they are.

You assume that people just buy Android devices because the iPhone is not available on their favorite carrier, we'll see what happens when Verizon does get it. And while the retina display looks nice, it's soo tiny. Angry Birds is way more fun on my Evo compared to my friends iPhone 4.

I for one do not want to be a resident in Apples Walled Garden, it's smartphone socialism. Hi, welcome to Apple, here is what we offer, use it all, but don't use anything we don't like...pffftt...no thanks.
Lets not open up this can of worms called "Antennagate", although I did find the public tounge lashing Uncle Steve gave to the press rather amusing. While I have the utmost respect for the man, his smug attitude just doesn't sit well with me. I'd rather listen to a keynote from Uncle Bill.

And seriously, as mentioned above, while iOS is rather smooth, the other devices are catching up quickly, and there is way more room for innovation on Android phones because of the limitless form factors it supports. You might think that every iPhone user is loyal, but not all of them are, just ask around in this forum.

300000 Apps, sure....they've been doing it for 3 years now. Android is at around 100000 and really, seriously app development didn't really start until just over a year ago, so we're right on track.

In the end it's all up to the consumer. I hope most people do their shopping the informative way, actually trying out each device before buying one, not just running out and buying an iPhone because it's shaping up to be the Razr of the present time.

I do have one question for you though, .... you only have 6 posts, why did you join Android Central?

Keep in mind that the App store opened in 2008 and has hit over 300,000 apps in a little over two years. That's unheard of period, and it's gaining momentum while Android seems to be waining. No one knows what Apple has planned next, so it's debatable if the others are really catching up or just going to where the puck has been. Game Center, HDR camera and the gyroscope came out of left field.

When people can judge the devices side by side the iPhone still sells more and Android's UI customization is not a major win among consumers. People like the iPhone because of its ease of use and the ecosystem. Something that the Android users just don't get. Consumers also prefer the safety and cohesiveness that the iPhone ecos offers and delivers on. They are not brainless followers as the Android community likes to characterize them, but smart people who make smart choices. Class over mass.

I'm an iPhone user. I also own the iPad. I have used Macs my entire designing career and respect Apple products for their innovation among other reasons. I come to this forum as well as others, not to criticize, but to get the skinny from the common folks, instead of just going by what the press and blogs offer. Occasionally, I comment.

In the end the only choice is Apple or the rest. Once you've made the decision to go Android that's your last choice. The carriers will decide the rest. And if you think about it, isn't that the same thing Apple does? You're in a walled garden too. Verizon chooses to use Bing, create their own curated app store and potentially lock you out of Google's marketplace. They can totally hijack Android and do whatever they want and you have no choice. Load up the crap apps that you can't delete. With Apple and the iPhone, you know up front. The major difference is that on the iPhone Apple controls the user experience, not the carrier. I certainly prefer Apple being in control. A lot of what I just wrote is hyperbole, but hopefully you got what I'm saying.

I know what you're saying, it's like talking to my brother....he and you share the same exact thoughts.

I just find the iPhone boring, they have been selling the same thing for 4 years with hardly any changes to the look of the device at all. If you ask me, there in place eco system now limits them with what they can do with the iphone. I think that's where the gyroscope and the HDR camera came from, they just had to do something to make the thing more appealing to the people that were asking themselves why Apple has been selling the same thing with minor upgrades year after year. With version 4, the iPhone has finally caught up to all the features that most other smart phones had for years, so since they can't announce copy and paste anymore, they had to add some other stuff, like the forward facing camera, which, as we all know, you can only use on wifi when using apples application. That makes no sense to me, if you're in the range of a wifi network, you're usually at home where you can use a computer with a webcam and don't have to hold the phone in front of your face the entire time.

The other major changes iPhone 4 got really just backfired, at least in my opinion. I found the older version more attractive looking, and the pretty stainless stell edge/antenna...well...we all know what happened with that. Even if it works, it definitely didn't improve reception compared to the 3GS, hell even Apple themselves used one of their rather complicated statistics in the tounge lashing Unlce Steve gave the media about antennagate, saying that the iPhone 4 only has "this many" MORE dropped calls than the 3GS....in other words...great design only perfroms marginally worse than the old design.....ok....sure....

Looking into the future...what can the iPhone fan look forward too? Well hopefully a radical redesign. 5 straight years of the same thing with a few more bells and whistles is getting long in the tooth. Problem is...what would they do? Add a keyboard?? Blasphemy! Nobody wants that! The elegance would be gone! A higher megapixel camera? Good heavens why? In the keynote introducing the iPhone 4, it was explained to us that we don't need higher megapixel cameras to get better pictures, so that would be a silly thing to do! How about increasing that screen resolution some more....more sillyness...if we can't see pixels now, what's the point of increasing it? How about.....yes...lets make the thing bigger, get that bigger screen going, bump it up to 4.5"! But! If we do that and keep the same resolution, then we won't have the pixel density required to qualify as a retina display anymore! Shucks! Now what? Increase the screen resolution together with the screen size? Well, that might be there only bet, but since Apple will probably want to be backwards compatible to all apps, it would have to be a multiple of the current resolution, and that's going to be tall feat for any processor.

So...seriously now, what will the next iPhone have?

Where did you read that Android popularity among developers is waning? Link please?

Carrier hijack...hm...well, at least Android owners have the choice of 4 carriers, and many manufacturers and form factors, that's gotta count for something!

You should listen to your brother, not just because he defends the iPhone, but rather that he seems to think outside the box. For Android users, it's tough to grasp the iPhone and the whole iPhone ecosystem. It's easier to follow the crowd mentality and criticize it for being too controlled or lack this or that feature, and I don't mean to sound condescending, but rejecting this kind of mind set is what allows Apple to create great products. Imagine if Apple had simply followed what Palm, Microsoft, RIM or Nokia did in creating the iPhone? It would be more of the same. Instead they took it to a whole new level and it is a HIT. Redefined the industry. Along with iPod, it changed the culture. Not many products can/have done that! Now you have a whole new class of devices all trying to out do the iPhone. It's this kind of, out of the box, thinking that will keep Apple ahead of the pack. We expect great things from Apple. I can't say the expectation is the same for the competition.

It's tough to say what Apple has in mind for iPhone/iOS 5, but whatever it is, I think will put the iPhone even further ahead of the competition. Steve Jobs did say the iPhone was at least five years ahead of the competition in the 2007 keynote introducing the iPhone. So in my mind he may surprise us all.

"Android is unofficially thought to have passed 100,000 apps but may be seeing cooling demand: an update from unofficial tracker Androlib has shown the app submission rate declining from August after months of large increases."
