Is 5G totally dependent upon a the phone, or does carrier sim have to be special too?

I bought a phone 5G through T-Mobile, but have to remain on T-Mobile for a little while until they will let me unlock the phone.

Is it just the phone that requires 5G capability or is the sim card special too. Reason being I want to go back to using Mint Mobile sim card, (which is a wholesaler using T-Mobile).

Not that 5G is an over riding factor, but just curious. I can get 12GB for same price as T-Mobiles 8GB plan.

The SIM card doesn't have to be special, but it does have to be registered properly with the carrier for 5G access (since some charge extra for it).
