Is a random shut off a software or hardware problem?

My gnex shuts off about 2-3 times a day. I was wondering if this was a software problem which could be fix with an update or is it an hardware. If it is hardware, I need to make arrangements to go get an exchange.

This is not happening to everyone. How often does it happen? I had one only and it was today. In the middle of a notification tone it would not stop ringing and then rebooted. Look at this power dip from when it happens. Very odd. If its daily for you I'd swap it out.

software. The thunderbolt had similar issues except much more widespread and was fixed through an ota.

While I was typing a reply in Touchdown my GN went black and rebooted! This was the second time I saw it reboot.

I uninstalled some apps so maybe that will fix it. I think the ICS is too new so it has way too many bugs.

Mine has done it a few times when trying to access the ESPN scorecenter app from the recent apps menu. It will freeze up and reboot I assume it is that app not being optimized for ics but not sure

How can you blame it on ics when you uninstall an app that hasn't been updated? That is the app not ics.

The problem is none of the apps were even running when it shuts off? I don't even know anymore. My last resort is to factory reset and see what happens.

One time while typing a txt in the stock sms app it rebooted.

Even weirder while plugged into a charger with headphones on yesterday it actuall shut off.. not rebooted, but simply shut off twice within 10 minutes while watching movie trailers on YouTube

I'm pretty sure it's software. Back when the Thunderbolt was released a lot/most people had this issue. After a update or two it's basically unheard of.

I had my first hard reboot today after running hard since launch day. Was running the NPR radio app at the time to stream the hourly news. That app pretty well bites it anyway, so I'm not surprised.

Mine rebooted yesterday for the first time then twice this morning. And now my spotify app force closes overtime I open it. Never had reboots in the last two weeks and spotify has always ran great. Not sure what's up.

After uninstalling many apps such as NBA gametime, espn, data enabler, handcent, and loads more, the problem seems to have gone. For how long? We shall see...

I would add them back one at a time, maybe one every other day, and see if you can figure out if it was a specific one that was causing the reboot

I did not have the random reboots until I flashed a custom ROM last night. I will flash another ROM today or tomorrow and see if the problem persists.
I did not have this problem while I was on stock ROM even after rooting.

Not sure how much of this has been covered in other threads since there is too much in this forum to read it all, but my GNex has not been the same that it was the first day I got it. As with each smartphone I have had, once I installed apps and changed settings it now lags and occasionally reboots for no apparent reason. It's done it a few times that I have noticed but never when I was actually using it, so far. I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but when using an app and then switching to my homescreen, the homescreen is blank except for the app drawer button. Then the icons load after anywhere from one to five seconds. It does it a lot after using the stock browser, but occasionally after using other apps too.

I am using the stock ROM but the phone is rooted.

I have not had reboots so far. It could be a rouge app that you have installed. I had this problem on my Fascinate was hard to track down, but ended up being an app.

I had mine reboot once since launch day.
I dont have alot of apps on it now and also running the stock rom just rooted/ unlocked an stock launcher.
I think my issue was an app.I try to look and see when the app was last updated or if it mentions it is ICS compatiable before I add any apps.
So far it hasnt rebooted again :)

Just had a shut down happen to me, only had the phone a few hours, went to market and typed "ch" in the search (chrome to phone) and boom it went black... had to power back on manually.

It has only happened once since i have had it and happened yesterday while browsing amazon. It just froze and restarted. I think google needs to have a feedback program like HTC does, after anything unexpected like that happens, HTC phones usually ask you if you wanna sumbit the error report to HTC.
