Is Android TV media player HDMI output software or hardware coded?

For years I used Raspberry Pi models 1,2,3,4 with HDMI output via an HDMI-VGA adapter on an old SVGA (1280x1024) monitor. No problem for the Raspis to recognize the monitor and adapt the outputs automatically without any input from my side.
On my TVs with HDMI input I have Nokia 8000 Android Media players working also without problem, connected with a plain HDMI-cabble.
Now I wanted to replace a Raspi with another Nokia 8000 media player but could not get the adapter-monitor combo to work properly with it. The only display resolution which resulted in a picture at all was 720p 60Hz and RGB colors, but still it was distorted vertically, i.e the black areas below and above were missing. All other configs reported "out of range" of the monitor.
I returned the Nokia device and wonder whether it is worth trying another unit.
If it depends on the hardware, it might be worth to try another unit. If it is only software coded, it probably won't work. Maybe ancient Android versions might work, but then the apps would very probably not be compatible any more.
Is the HDMI output hardware coded or software coded? Any idea?
