Is anyone else having issues with smartphone earphone functions not working with Nexus 6P?

I have some "smartphone" headphones that work with my old Samsung S4, but they're not working with my new 6P even though they claim to be compatible with any Android phone. The function that I'm having issues with is the small button on the headphones that is supposed to pause music, skip a song if pressed twice, etc. None of these functions are working at all.

Anyone else having similar issues with their 6P, or is there something I'm failing to do with my phone to get them to work?
