Is anyone getting any lag or lockups?

I sometimes get a black screen with the buttons illuminated when I try to wake up my phone. I then have to press the power button to turn the black screen off as if it was on then press it one more time to turn the screen on. This happens quite often.

Yes this is happening to me about 3 or 4 times a day. Do you have the double tap home button for Svoice on or off? I don't know if this matters but I'm curious.

Same thing for me. Except if I leave the phone alone and not hit power button my display does come on eventually (sometimes up to 30 seconds). Definitely a problem.

I have mentioned this on another thread, but I am more convinced now that what I am experiencing is not placebo. I enabled ART runtime in the developer options and my phone seemed somewhat faster with decreased battery drain on idle. I switched back to Dalvik to get an OTA update, and I was surprised that it felt noticeably slower, so I switched back to ART and am loving life again. Nothing seems broken (so far!)

I have most of the bloatware disabled and only a few apps on my phone. I only download apps that don't require crazy permissions or run a lot of processes in the background.

I definitely notice lag. None of this 5 minute lag people speak of, but it takes the phone about 2-3 seconds to switch between tasks. For example if i'm browsing the web on chrome, and I get a text message. It takes the phone about 3 seconds to open up the text message. Also the camera always seems to lag for me. If I try to open the camera quick to capture something that just happened, I usually miss my opportunity because of the delay. It's very minor lag, but my iPhone was instant with everything...so i'm readjusting.

Yes you have to double tap the home button to use S voice which even then takes a while to load up.

I just turned that option off and added the icon to my home screen instead. My home button responds much quicker already. We will see if that helps the issue when the screen is off/locked.

I posted on the other thread regarding the s5 freezing and screen turning black on lock screen and not turning on.

I think I may have found a fix (at least has worked for me so far, which is pretty much all of Today so far). Search for an Ota software update. Install thad and that has worked for me. For some reason it did not automatically find this update i had to go into the settings and then to software update and refresh from there.

Also to note the s view case seems to be more responsive as well, however I will still get some lag when I just hit the power key to check the time on the s view window. Sometimes it will go black for a few seconds until I open the case. I hope this works for you all as well.

I find my lag is mainly in looking at pictures it takes 3 seconds to pop up whereas everything was instant on iPhone

Does this require a root?

No it does not. Just search in the play store for these launchers and you can install them. They are basically just different home screen setups and what not. It doesn't "remove" touchwiz as some say. Touchwiz is still lurking everywhere.

For what ever reason Samsung programs this "bit" of lag into the system and it can easily be removed by simply going into "Developer settings" and resetting the "window animation scale", "Transition Scale" and "Animator duration scale" to either 0.5 or if you still feel too slowed down you can set them to "OFF"! This is the same so called issue we had with the S4 and it works the same with the S5!
Absolutely no lag between apps!
Now for those having issue with the home screen launching you may want to go to "S-Voice" settings and make sure the "open via the home key" box is NOT checked! Again the same issue we had with the S4...the home screen is waiting that extra split second to see if your going to double press the home button...better yet go into App manager and just turn off S-Voice!
Now if your STILL not happy, download Nova Launcher and in "Nova Settings" under "Look and Feel" set the "Scroll Speed" and "Animation Speed" to "Faster then light"...If this doesn't make you happy, GIVE UP nothing will ever make you happy and you are destine to be sad and depressed the rest of your natural life!!! LOL! You may actually find that this setting is a bit too much as scrolling can get a little out of hand and toning it down a bit is better, it's up to you!
Seriously, I do not know why Samsung does this and it is a bit frustrating to have to go through this with every new device, I can only speculate they feel it makes the device more stable with a wider variety of third party apps, again, I don't know!

Cheers

How do you change those settings on the s5? Where are the Dev settings? Any possible risk to the phone? My main concern is the extra 3 seconds apps like Facebook take to scroll photos.

To enable developer options go to settings /about phone then tap "build number(?)" 8x. This will open up developer options and allow you to turn off those troublesome animations. No risk to phone at all. But don't screw around with too much else in there. LOL

Keep in mind if you have power saving mode enabled (not ultra) this will limit cpu and the phone will exhibit a little bit of lag. I forgot I had it turned on and once disabled the phone was much quicker (after doing the dev animation tweaks).

I only have a single complaint, which is that the phone feels just a skosh too wide in the hand (I wish it was the same width as the S4 or preferably a bit narrower).

Otherwise, I love every aspect about this phone, especially the camera, screen, and fingerprint scanner.

No lags here. I'm using Nova Launcher Prime

I have a related but much more serious problem. My 10-days old "refurb" S5 has a FULL lockup issue (only way out is to pull the battery) AND an overheating/battery dumping problem. It started the day after I received it, even before I started installing apps. 2 trips to the VZ store later (plus an hour-long call to customer and tech support) later, I have a replacement (also refurb) on the way in a couple of days. I'm really frustrated with this device! My guess is the "refurb" consisted of powering the phone up, seeing the "normal" screens, and cleaning it. I'm an electrical engineer and WORK FOR Verizon! Not impressed with service or support for this phone!

BTW, it's now bricked; no recovery. I guess I'm just phoneless until I get the replacement and get it activated.
