Is anyone's Epic actually sleeping?

Hmm... the phone not sleeping also explains why it takes so freaking long for the phone to charge. I'm very anxious to see whether or not this new update helps the battery life or not.
Well, thing is I've seen it take three hours (I think - might have been longer) to go from empty to a full charge while powered off. If you think that's bad, then balance that with what some have said is a potential 20hrs+ of life if you follow what at this point is considered "normal" battery conservation procedures (assuming the phone does go to sleep like it's supposed to).

Set my epic next to my bed last night at 100% to see how much it would drain in 6 hours. Woke up, it was down to 58%. So a 42% drain over 6 hours doing NOTHING.

-DRM was killed
-Airplane mode toggled earlier in the day
-unnecessary apps killed
-wifi toggled on (though I'm not sure if that matters when the phone is "sleeping")

battery usage upon checking my phone:

32% cell standby (3% time without signal)
23% phone idle
14% appbrain market (?!)
10% display
x% - rest belonged to smaller things

This is the ONLY thing that is killing me about this phone. I came from a pre, which had awful battery life if you were using it, but if I just needed to carry it around all day in my pocket, it would last PLENTY long, even overnight as well. With this phone I'm tied to a charger because sleep doesn't seem to use any less battery than having it on :/ If I go out with friends or go over to someone's house, I either need to turn my phone on airplane JUST so it can live through the night (which it never does even in airplane mode) or try to sip some power from a charger every single chance I get. It's ridiculous that the thing will drain to death just sitting in your pocket for a few hours.

ericdives, I thanked you above. I came from Pre, am used to finicking with phones but had loved the Epic, even the Evo, out of the box. So many tweaks came standard, the battery worked.
And then came the udpate and my phone went to hell.

I am reading and trying different settings, your condensed settings in post 21 above should be read and tried by all. I had read ---lyn's postings which also gave good info, among others in other forums, so this is well written and easy to follow.

I had fiddled for 2 days, went to Sprint store to exchange within 30 days, hoping new one wouldn't have these issues. They won't exchange because they couldn't replicate, smartphones suck battery, no other complaints, and its too expensive to "just replace." I mentioned, not nicely, this happened after Samsung/Sprint's update and its too expensive for me to have if I can't make it past 4:00.

So I do like this phone better than hubby's Evo. His battery is wonderful, so will keep working and reading, so should everyone else. There has got to be a solution.

Mine is to make this work where I'm done with tweaks, or I will go back to my Pre, save a lot of money, and wait till the updates float through. Its not worth the hassle if these don't "temporarily" fix the problem.

Good work by all.

No problem. I add to it regularly ... unfortunately (going to add a tidbit about "Spare Parts" and sleep and restarting when I get a moment).

My Epic appears to be sleeping as I would expect it to. Time since last unplugged is three of hours and time without sleeping is twenty two minutes. That seems about right for my usage.

Ok, that is correct but do me a favor and check this is another few hours and report back. If i reboot, my phone will also sleep normally for a few hours and then all of a sudden stop sleeping.

Yesterday my phone went about 4 hours since boot working fine, then stopped sleeping so i'd be curious to see your results a little later on.

Is your Wifi Sleep Policy set to Never? I recently did this and it has helped a lot as well as all the other tweaks you have done. Autostarts is also a great app to make sure certain battery drains like media hub and drm DON'T start at all. Other actions than boot can cause services to run as well.

I was getting par battery with my 5 year old winmo phone with its original battery so I also installed spare parts and went on a drive.

With no unnecessary services running and no running applications I got the following for being unplugged for 45 minutes:

Running (100%)
Screen on (1.6%)
Phone on (2.2%)
All else .x%

Battery use said:

Call standby 34%
Voice Calls 31%
Phone Idle 11%
Spare Parts 10% <--- ???
Display 7%
Android system 6%
else insignificant

I guess my phone isn't sleeping either :/

EDIT: I have DRM and Mediahub killed and check regularly to make sure they are killed, so those aren't the culprit for me

I now have a total time since last unplug of seven hours. Time without sleep is one hour and twelve minutes, which is just slightly longer than my actual usage. I assume it takes a couple of minutes to decide to sleep after I shut off the screen. Anyway it appears to be sleeping as I would expect it to even after seven hours. And in those seven hours the battery has dropped from 96% to 64%.

Wow yours is working properly. Did you do anything to the phone and did you do the last update from a couple of weeks ago?

Theory, based on info about the coming patch: not sleeping is related to wifi use. If you've used wifi, even if you turn it off, the phone no longer sleeps properly.

Anyone second/confirm? Anyone debunk?

Sorry for the lack of eloquence- quick posting from bed using swype.

Not sure, my phone is actually sleeping right now (3 hours, 44 minutes since reboot), and i just switched my wifi off then on, and it's still sleeping properly.

I did recently change my wifi sleep policy to "never", so it doesn't keep switching back and forth with the screen off.

I've been doing some experimenting and I have found a solution that works for me (today anyway). I've been finding that the sleep problem seems to be triggered by charging the phone. When I unplug it after a full charge it will not sleep regardless of what programs or processes running (100% time running). This morning I took the battery out immediately after charging and restarted. I then turned off the DRM (it does seem to contribute for me as well). After that my sleep time seems to be in the realistic range.

I'm kind of wondering if it has something to do with over charging or using a higher power charger (I've been using my old Pre charger). Don't know why that would be the case but who knows.

Don't know if this will work for anyone else or if it will work for me tomorrow (the DRM thing by itself seemed to work for a day or two). I'm going to try the stock charger over night. Anybody else having issues using a Pre charger?

This is exactly in line with some of the testing I was doing today. With wifi off, Spare Parts always shows time without sleep to be less than 10% when the phone has been in standby for awhile. Turning WIFI back on, and resetting Spare Parts, time without sleep goes up to NO LESS than 55% and most times it is much higher.

It's actually encouraging to me to find out that WIFI is the cause of the sleepless Epics, since one of the bullet-point fixes on this upcoming maintenance release from Sprint is "WiFi standby battery drain"

Ok, anyone having the sleeping problem, try going into your advanced WiFi settings and switching the WiFi sleep policy to "Never". I did this earlier today because of a suggestion on XDA.

So far i have gone exactly 6 hours since reboot and my awake % (running %) is at 16% with total time without sleeping at 59 minutes.

This is by far the longest my phone has gone with the sleep working properly.

I hope this is the solution and not just an anomaly on my part.

Can anyone with the sleep problem duplicate these results and verify?

Thanks

I have not done anything to the phone except shut down DRM and toggle airplane mode as I've learned from this forum. Updated to DI07. It is otherwise as I found it in the box.

It has now been 17 hours since my last unplug. The phone has been idle for the last 9 of those hours, with 3g toggled off for good measure, and is now at 47%. My total time without sleep is 1:45 and that is only slight above my actual usage.

Regarding the wifi theory above, I have it on for about twenty minutes of my usage time, and cannot see that it made any difference.

My experience with Wifi on - seldom use but it was on when update came thru. After horrendous battery drain, and research with apps, found history showing that Wifi was on continually even though there were no toggles or switches showing it on, meaning something to hit to turn it off.

I have gone through every setting to get phone's battery usage back in line, so this update cannot hurt. In other words, going to be hesitant to turn it back on if everything else is fine. Would rather drain my phone using 3g.

Try what i mentioned above with setting the WiFi sleep policy to never. My phone has been working perfectly since then.

I am trying to find out if anyone else can duplicate the results.
