Is Atrix worth keeping for another year?

So I am using my Atrix since the beginning of March this year and I've been enjoying it for all this time. I guess I was lucky not to have any serious issues with it and with the GB update it works like a clockwork. (Thank God) Now that we are most likely will be getting ICS on it, it should become even more powerful (at least I hope so) So my question to you guys is how many of you who extended the contract with this phone planning to use it for another year? I was tempted to get Galaxy S II and then Atrix 2 but there always were some things I didnt like about all those phones compared to the Atrix. I know that next year will bring more ICS LTE phones but since i'm stuck with ATT for another year there isnt much choice I have and I dont want to continue extending my contract with them. I've however preordered Asus TF Prime. (yay! ) which will be used with tethered Atrix. So I figured that with ICS update my Atrix should still remain a powerful device for another year and LTE is not really a dealbreaker to me. What do you say guys/girls, who's planning to keep it for another year? and if not why? :)

I doubt the Atrix would get ICS on the sheer notion of the screen size/resolution. answer is no not worth keeping it. Its gonna be a back up phone/hack toy until the world goes to full LTE and it'll just be obsolete

I don't currently know of any reason I would get rid of the Atrix. I'm really happy with it, and I don't know of upcoming features or hardware that would make me ditch it. Of course, I'd still be using my iPhone 3GS if it had been possible for me to easily unlock it so that I could use it for a several-month stay overseas. So perhaps I'm not really the rapid-upgrade type.

I got my Atrix on release day in February. For the most it has been a wonderful device and since it more than likely wont be getting ICS i decided to move on not only to another device but another platform. I'm not abandoning my Atrix all together it just wont be my daily driver. I couldn't see myself staying with it into the next year. IMO AT&T released the Atrix 2 too soon and made the OG Atrix obsolete too soon.

I got my Atrix on release day as well, and IMO it will be worth keeping if you decide to root it and go with Cyanogen Mod9, which is a popular rom that will he based on ICS. As others said it most likely won't get the update. It was a great phone for it's time, but I'm feeling the need for a bigger screen and better camera. Being the first dual core phone and having QHD resolution, the Atrix gave me a good years run with Android, time for me to move on tho. Bit if you really don't want to upgrade, I would still have to say for all intensive purposes, in sure your Atrix will hold up fine. Don't get the Atrix 2, 1ghz cpu even at dual core is yesterdays technology. I have another upgrade again in Feb (thanks to being in a family plan), and I'm hoping early next year AT&T will have an HTC phone with Beats Audio, otherwise I'm probably going with the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. I'm in NYC and LTE is being tested here now and will most likely be in full effect soon.

Thank you guys for all your responses. But where did you get an idea that OG Atrix will not be getting ICS? I just googled a bit and it still not known whether the Atrix will or will not get the update. in fact there are some 'lists' of the phones that will be getting the ICS and Atrix is among them. I know its all rumors of course but at least nowhere it says for sure that it will not be getting it.... is there something I'm missing here?

None of is know for sure, we all seem to be guessing just based on previous update patterns. If it does get ICS, it will probably get it late, definitely after the Atrix 2. But hey, I hope we're wrong and it does get it.

considering that google acquired motorola mobility and judging by the numerous very prompt Atrix updates I am inclined to believe it will get the ICS. maybe after the Atrix 2 or maybe even at the same time.. I might be wrong of course... we'll see..

It's funny to me that people still put down the Atrix. I love this phone and I'll tell you why. I started with the Infuse and its huge screen and I couldn't take it. The Atrix's 4 inch screen is the perfect size for me and I don't know of another phone that has a 4 inch screen that has the Atrix's specs. It has been updated frequently and has great roms, i.e. cm7. I could see the fascination with an att branded Nexus when it comes out but I know that where I live lte isn't coming anytime soon as we don't even have the backhaul yet. I don't know what others think they'll be getting out of something new but outside of lte there's not much. As far as ICS, who knows but I think it'll get it based on what I've read, but even then I agree with the guy who mentioned cm9. I run cm7 weekly and couldn't imagine going back to stock.

I agree with jhonnyutah, the Atrix was and still is a great phone. And maybe it will get ICS, myself however I'm just an upgrade junky lol. I do want a bigger screen, HD resolution, and a bump up in camera. I'm satisfied with the Atrix's cpu however, but who knows if I would he a year from now, so I'm looking for a bump up in that as well. Like I previously said, the Atrix was a great phone for its time, Motoblur didn't bother me much, and if you run CM7 its even a greater experience, and CM9 will even make this phone greater. For the cost conscious of anyone not wanting to commit further with AT&T, I think this phone will last for you. But for someone like me, I want the latest and greatest, that's why I got the Atrix the day it came out.

I also bought mine on release day. It has performed well and I like it alot. I have added a Seidio 3200 mAh battery, solved the calibration problem due to a bigger battery capacity. I did have a problem with spontaneous reboots (4-6 / week) for a while but that went away when I switched from LauncherPro to Go Launcher. I use most all features and am hard pressed to think of a feature I would like to add.

I doubt the Atrix will get ICS. The Atrix was a disappointment to ATT and Motorola. I believe the basic problem was that the build cost was too high and the only way Moto could get the margins they wanted was to overprice it. This is why the Atrix2 came out so quick. It is a cost reduced version of the original. It is my expectation that Moto views spending engineering time to upgrade the Atrix s/w as good money thrown after bad.

My problem is what would I switch to? the Galaxy Nexus has no SD card and the RAZR has a non-removable battery. Both design choices are deal killers for me. I have decided to keep my Atrix until there is a phone available that I want. Marginally faster CPU clock, a few more Mega-pixels mane nothing to me. LTE does, so I wait.

I am still on stock GB, but may unlock the boot-loader and install a CM release if I get good reports.
Otherwise, I wait...

...and, I really do like this phone and have been carrying Moto phones for 2 decades now. During that time I had one Nokia. It was a POS.

Since I'm planning to switch to another carrier I should have plenty of time to wait and see what new devices will come out next year. Ideally I would love a Tegra 3 ICS device with design like Galaxy Nexus but smaller screen. and I think we'll be seeing more of such devices next year. so I absolutely agree with you on that one.

I love my Atrix. The display size is large enough to do what I need to yet it's small enough to still fit in my pocket w/o feeling like I've got a massive lump in it. It has plenty of ram and storage to do what I want. Now I would love getting ICS on it, but I'll believe it when I see it. Since the Atrix and the Atrix 2 are based on different chipsets is the reasoning for my skepticism. The only issue I've had w/ mine is the fingerprint scanner. It stopped working a while back and a few days ago it got realllly hot. I had to power off and reboot the phone. One I did the heat issue hasn't come back. So I'd love ICS, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Honestly, I haven't had great experiences with my Atrix. This is my third one in total (got it release day back in Feb as well) and it has had plenty of issues which I've discussed openly about in various threads here in the past. I like the Android OS and, usually, I like the phone itself...when it's acting right. I haven't had pleasant experiences with Motorola so I know for sure my next android phone will NOT be manufactured from them - which is funny because mostly everyone on AC loves them. Guess it's just my luck or something. The Xoom I had for several months had quite a few issues as well though (also, of course, manufactured by Motorola).

Anyway, due to these issues I don't feel like elaborating on in yet another thread (lol), I am kind of itching to get away from this phone and move on, unfortunately... I did enjoy it for the most part though. However, I am stuck in contract with this phone for a long time still, so unless I buy off-contract, which is a billion dollars for a poor college student like myself who has other priorities, I'm just...stuck. I've thought about going the "trade on craigslist" route people talk of, but I wouldn't know how to go about it, and there's worries of safety, as well as I don't want to give someone my phone and then 3 days later they say it's messed up and constantly bug me, or vice versa...

I've been asking myself the same thing lately. I've got an upgrade available to me soon, so I've been looking at the new phones. I feel bound to the Atrix though because I own the laptop dock. Can't seem to find much about the future of the Atrix line and when the next will be coming out that will be LTE compatible that works with the dock. Not too anxious to get a new LTE phone because I'm in an area that probably won't get the coverage for a while. Just hoping the two coincide, that would be great.

"Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Atrix is. You have to see it for yourself." -- Morpheus, after trading in his Nokia 8110 for a vastly superior super phone

I got mine in march and have had the same unit since that day and its super solid no hardware ussues at all and once you flash cm7 or a weekly release it really makes your device shine.O.C to 1.45 Ghz and fingerscanner.Aling with setcpu I can say proudly even with heavy usage of data, games, texting, calling and eveything in between I get 10-16 hour days if that's not good I don't know what is...I'm going to be keeping this untill ICS matures and is worked out aling with the little bugs.

wow :) i see a lot of people are on the same boat as me :) I dont care much for LTE. I really love fingerprint scanner thing and its just a shame its not being implemented on any other phones. I'd love to get Galaxy Nexus eventhough the screen is a little big for my taste.
sk8trix so the fingerprint scanner finally works on cm7? I was thinking to flash it but at that time fps wasnt working and i really use ONLY fps to unlock my phone.

Yea,you should download the stable mod first and then flash the nightly#3 on top of that, this will enable the fingerprint scanner which works really good.I'm going to leave you some links on here.

CM7 stable release
* Official CM7 for Atrix Stable only (No Nightly )* Atrix CM Ba2tF RELEASED!! - xda-developers

Weekly Relase(1,2,3)
Weekly builds courtesy of Atrix-Dev_team - xda-developers

It is a little slow here and there nd some FCs but you just have to reboot a few times and it gets fixed if anything going it CWM and fixing permission also helps but I haven't had any issues at all and there is more system RAM and its a fast ROM.Only ting is that webtop isn't working but if you don't mind that everything else works perfect.

I just love the size and power. I get a full day with HEAVY use, had the same when I was on BB.

My killer would be in this size, with slider keyboard, and LTE

I actually like GB with GoLauncher
