Is Chrome draining my battery, and how can I stop it?

AC Question

I have a Galaxy s3.

I've been noticing for the past few months that my phone has an exceedingly erratic battery life: sometimes it goes the whole day barely using any battery, and other times the battery seemingly plummets from 80% to critical in an hour. The extreme drain appears to correlate with using Chrome, though it's unclear if it always gets sapped during/after using Chrome, which leads me to think Chrome is a necessary but insufficient trigger. Placing the phone in airplane mode halts the drain, as does restarting the phone, but obviously both are bothersome and should be unnecessary. Can anyone theorize why this behavior is happening, and if there's a way to stop it?

If helpful, I have a picture of the battery charge-level details before, during and after the behavior, and would be happy to describe it

Perhaps you could try an app called gsam battery monitor. It will tell you if apps are using an inordinate percentage of your battery. Also how old is your battery?

The battery is 2 years old; the overall battery life is, certainly, reduced from its original state, but that does not by itself explain why under certain circumstances there are rapid drops in battery life. As an additional piece of data: I have noticed that when it enters this state, the 'Awake' history bar in the battery life monitor becomes significantly more active.
