Is Gear Fit 2 ok as a "lite" smart watch?

I'm probably going to be getting a Note 7 and trying to decide between the free Gear Fit 2 or the 256gb micro sd card.

I've sort of wanted a smart watch for a while but they're just too darn gigantic for my liking. So I'm thinking the Fit 2 might be an ok alternative. Not terribly interested in the fitness part of it but I'm thinking the txt and call notifications (and watch) could be useful for what I'm wanting. Plus it looks to be a more reasonable size than say a Gear S2.

What do you all think that have a Fit 2 - can it double as a daily watch/lite smart watch?

Thanks.

Hi There!

Here is a great review of the Fit 2. Hope this helps!

Samsung Gear Fit 2 review - CNET

Anything from c net reviews that isn't ios is going to get less than a stellar review, no matter what it is and how good it is. Because it didn't outlast a dedicated fitness band it has poor battery life? The Apple watch is measured in single digit hours of battery life, unlike the Fit 2 that is measured in days between charges.
The biggest flaw with the Fit 2 is going to be the software. Samsung sucks at that and seems to be ok with it.
I've got a Fit 1 and as a phone butler (notifications and stuff) it excels because you get the butler capabilities in a much smaller and more comfortable form factor than a Gear or AW variant. It's when you want to go to the next level of capability (independent apps, respond to texts, etc) that the Fits lose their appeal . They're very cumbersome to use for that but it can be done. I don't own a Fit 2 yet but it's a definite improvement over the first generation while keeping the same form factor and gorgeous screen from my tests in stores.

I have a fit 2 and I've been pretty happy with it as a basic fitness (steps) and smartwatch lite. I get the notifications I want so I don't miss important phonecalls/texts/messages, even with the phone on silent. I can read the message and decide if I want to reply (text can do a few preprogrammed replies), reject phone calls etc. Calender/alarms from phone come in fine. Plus, timer and stopwatch etc.

Overall I've been pretty happy with it for its limited purpose. I charge it every other night (sometimes stretch to 3 days, but it is dead/nearly dead by the end of day 3)

I would say yea..

i have the gear S2. and now the gear fit2 (cause it was free hehe), the only thing i miss while wearing the fit2 is not being able to answer text from it. other then that i can do all of the same things that i do on the $300 one.(ugh kicking myself in the butt)

Fit2 is super comfy, so far im at 20.5hr since last charge battery at 66% .... could probably get more.
today was just one of those days - i checked my phone found 30 whatsapp msgs and about 15 text, 2 missed calls. the fit2 was constantly vibrating with alerts.

Hey DD,
You can respond to texts via canned messages that are provided by Samsung, but you can modify and create your own in the Gear app on your exploding N7. :)

Looks like a nice watch. Mine is coming soon, though I won't be replacing my Gear S2. I like having the phone on my watch. I am getting the Gear Fit 2 with the purchase of my Note 7.

My advice is not to expect it to be perfect.
Perfect step counts, perfect stair counts, etc.
No fitness band perfectly does these things.

That said, it's a very motivational tool, and provides more functionality than most fitness bands.
IMO, it's beyond a fitness band and part way to a full-up smart watch.
The display alone is to die for. It makes other fitness bands look like toys.

I really love this thing.
The fact that I got it for free with my N7 is just amazing.
Brilliant move on Samsung's part, as I am very likely to buy the next Samsung fitness band.

I like it as a smart watch. I can quickly respond while running. I can change songs without touching my phone. HR monitor is accurate checked it against a pulse ox at work. If it could check 02 sat like the phone that would be great!!!

I have a Samsung Gear Live (Android Wear) and now a Gear Fit 2. If you've never used Android Wear, then the Gear Fit 2 might make an acceptable device for notifications. However, if you've been using Android Wear for a while, then you might be like me and feel the smartwatch features are lacking.

For me it fails in a few spots. (1) lack of microphone (2) lack of supported text apps to reply to, and (2) 3rd party apps.

(1) Lack of microphone: I love being able to use voice and reply to a text message from my watch. I don't even need to get the phone out of my pocket. It works great for that.
(2) Sammy has some canned answers to respond to text messages but I think you need to use their text app on your Galaxy. I use Google's SMS Messenger and so I can not even reply to text messages. I need to use my phone.
(3) On my Android Wear watch I can respond to both Google and Microsoft 2 factor notifications and even Symantec's VIP codes for my work. None of these are available on the Gear Fit 2. Once again I need to reach for my phone.

So now I am actually wearing two devices instead of one. I've disabled the notifications on the Gear Fit and just use it for a fitness band which so far it seems to do a good job. I like it for that.

So to sum up. If you have fallen in love with Android Wear and it's notifications, you will not like the smartwatch features from the Fit 2.
