Is it necessary to have a case?

I got a Galaxy S II (AT&T, SGH-I777) a few days ago and was wondering if I need to have a case. I got a $10 case from Amazon for now, but do not like cases in general because the dust/lint gets trapped in openings and edges. If the Galaxy S II does not scratch easily I would prefer not to use a case and let its beauty shine.

It really doesn't. I had an Infuse 4G (very similar form factor) and I never had a case on it, and it was fine for the duration I used it (nearly one year). I did put a case on my SII (as of today), only because I found a really cute one, but otherwise, I wouldn't have felt a need to put one on. The form factor is very durable and is not prone to irreversible damage that the likes of iPhone, HTC, or Nokia phones can get on some of their parts.

I even dropped the Infuse 3 or 4 times at a club, on the dance-floor, and it was fine. So yeah, no need for a case, unless you want one.

I was torn between having a case and keeping it caseless because I love the feel of the phone by itself... but I went ahead and blew 20 bucks on the Seidio Active case. Liking it so far.

If its as durable as the first Galaxy S, then it definitely does NOT need a case. My coworker actually threw her Galaxy S at a bench and let it bounce off and hit the floor just to show me it was indestructible.... Scared the crap out of me.

While it may be indestructible, I'll be fine with my screen protector and case. I mean hey, get more resale value if you keep it nice and pretty.

It is a tough choice whether to get a case. On one hand, it is great to know that the Galaxy S II is so durable, looks great, and it is so thin that I hardly feel it in my pocket. On the other hand, having a case and protecting it from small scratches and accidental drops will get more resale value. (I should note that I have never dropped a phone.) With a case there is also the added advantage of being less slippery and making the phone slightly thicker also makes it easier to hold.

Hello I had the same dilemma when I bought mine and I found the thinnest, cheapest, best looking case for mine
It barely adds any girth to it. Go on ebay and type in galaxy s2 s line case. I got the case, 5 screen protectors, and a car charger for 7$!!!! You will not regret it, scouts honor.

That is similar to the Diztronic case I am currently using. I got it before I got the phone and figured if I do not end up using a case I could sell it along with the phone when it is time to upgrade.

I have been playing around with the phone (holding it in different ways, putting it in pocket and pulling it out, etc.) without and without the case today and found that it is easier to handle with a case. The added thickness (even though not much) and the small friction from the matte sides make it easier to handle. I think more thickness would be even nicer because my previous BlackBerry Torch is thicker than the Galaxy S II with the case (I know, it seems crazy to want a thicker phone hahaha). I ordered the Otterbox Commuter series today from Amazon. Will see how that compares to the $10 Diztronic case I have on now.

What do you guys think of soft vs. hard cases?

If you want a case get one. If not don't. This is the most ret arddded thread ever.
Obviously its not necessary otherwise Samsung would of included one with the phone.

I have a bad habit of dropping phones. Like I'll have it in my lap while driving and forget when I get out of the car and send my sprawling across the asphalt! I bought a case. Tho no screen protector is needed since it has gorrila glass.

If you drop it the plastic is gonna dent and chip easily. I dropped mine indoors and that happened.

Had the captivate and the Gorilla Glass definitely worked. Didn't use a screen protector and after a couple of years, I only have the slightest scratch on there that you really have to try hard to find. Same with the S2 and I throw it in my jeans pocket all the time (not with keys or coins though).

Why buy a nice, thin phone only to bulk it up with a case? Naked is the way to go!

That is a good point. I have tried the OtterBox Commuter and it made the phone look huge, but it does make the phone easier to hold.

It looks like that is the way I have to go anyways (no case; naked) because I have noticed that with both Diztronic case and the Incipio Feather cases, the person on the other end of a call hears echo of their own voice. Once I remove the case the problem goes away. A search on the forums turned up several solutions (lowering volume and turning off noise suppression) but introduced new problems. If I lower the volume I have hard time hearing the other caller. If I turn off noise suppression, the other caller hears too much of my background noises.

I used an incipio when I first got my phone it doesn't add bulk but offers minimal protection. Now I use an ottorbox commuter, great protection and doesn't add too much bulk.
