Is it necessary to have the latest software update?

[Android Central Question]

I have a Samsung Galaxy Sky, and I love it. Size, features, resolution, etc. But it hasn't had an update since 2017 and it's not about to get any. I use the phone for just that--a phone. No banking, no Facebook, etc. Do I need a software update?

Hello, I am new here and this will be my first answer.
Well, there is no need to update software if you are just a normal Android user but sometime it is mandatory. Updates always bring to the table, new features, making your device load faster. Although I focused mostly on improved security and faster performance.

Welcome to Android Central! Is it still on Marshmallow? If so, you might find increasing incompatibility with major apps in the not-too-distant future, as older Android versions lose support. Also, with 8 GB or internal storage (or possibly 16 GB), you will probably also encounter more low storage warnings (which you can't get around by using an SD card). So those are some things to consider regarding upgrading to a newer phone.

android update - no, security updates - yes. IMO as long as the apps you need continue to work properly, there really is no need to update.

Some new apps aren't compatible but if you don't need them you are probably fine.

Welcome to Android Central! As the others have said, your phone will work fine without the latest software updates, so long as you are not relying on current applications and the like. If you're just making calls and texting, I believe you should be just fine until your next upgrade.

Hi welcome to the forums. As long as you are not running many apps you should be ok for a while.
