Is it normal for hangout SMS to be so plain looking?

Completely agree. Can't stand any other texting app because they like to spice things up. I like my interface simple.

I may be stating an obvious thing to the OP, but if you assign that tmobile number to your contact list, then whatever image you have connected to them should appear. That would at least make the gray generic avatar go away.

Like most people, I guess, I don't have any images associated with phone numbers. Is there a way of getting rid of the visually ugly empty avatar in hangouts (or indeed in the dialler, and anywhere else)?
