Is it safe to accept the Android 5.0 OTA update from T-Mobile?

Hello. I own a LG Optimus L9 and earlier this morning before I went for a walk I received an update notice. At first I hit ignore but it won't go away. I met up with my friend and he got the update OTA from T-Mobile. His phone seems to be fine, but I want to make sure all my apps and settings will still be there. If they aren't, I'll copy them on paper. But I've heard horror stories from people how slow their devices are and their apps aren't working and the phone is crashing. If you can help determine whether it is safe or not to upgrade, that would be appreciated.
