Is it stupid to buy an Evo now?

Quick background: I'd be coming from AT&T where my service is pretty crappy. I'd also be coming from an iPhone. I recently tried Verizon, but the service was pretty bad in the places I use my phone most (home and work) - I tried a Thunderbolt. A buddy has Sprint and he gets great service at my office and he's got pretty good service when he comes over to my house. I'd consider Verizon again if Sprint doesn't work out because Verizon still gave me better coverage than AT&T.

Of the high-end Android phones out now for Sprint, the Evo has my eye the most. I do not care for a hardware keyboard (so the Epic & Shift are out) and I really want the option to have a SD care (so the Nexus S 4G is out). I know the Evo 3D is just around the corner. I don't care much for the 3D aspect, but the better display and faster processor makes me think it would be stupid to buy the Evo now. My main concern about the 3D would be the battery life.

I would have a service plan high enough to make me a premier customer so I could upgrade in a year, but I'm worried the Evo would be a terrible buy now, especially if it doesn't get Sense 2.0 and Gingerbread.

On the plus side, I can get the Evo 4G from Amazon right now for $120. I'm assuming the 3D will cost $200 if not more...

Am I better to just wait?

Depends. There are functioning Sense 2.0 Gingerbread ROMs and a developing Sense 3.0 ROM. The main thing for me is the difference in processors. Dual core is where it's at and the 3D is an option, it can be turned off. The Evo is still a great phone and I personally don't mind holding on to it an extra year. That being said, as a new customer I might wait for the 3D simply for the processing power upgrade and proper Sense 3.0 (which the Evo will not receive)

To be honest. This is the first time in a long time I'm not looking forward to an upgrade.

I guess it depends on how you define techie :)

I built my own computer and can somewhat troubleshoot software problems (with Google's help, of course!)

But I'm nervous about rooting and killing my phone. I'd have to read up on it more.

I love my EVO. That said, I'd wait right now and get the 3D. I don't care about the camera's gimmickry either. The processor though, is the difference maker.

In a word, "No". It's not a waste to buy an Evo, even now. My Evo is rockin' and rollin' still and it's not even rooted. It does EVERYTHING I need it to do, and anything I've wanted it to do. Great phone. I'd like an Evo3D, but I think I'm gonna' wait for the Evo AFTER the Evo3D to upgrade this time.

It's almost 12 months since the EVO came out. It all depends on you. Do you want the latest, greatest fastest phone? Get the EVO 3D. Can you wait a little while longer? get the EVO 3D. Do you want a still great phone but have to wait 2 years to upgrade? Get the EVO 4G. I bought mine the first week it came out and love this phone. But, I will wait until my 2 years is up (even though I have the Premier Gold where I can upgrade now and get the discount). Also, the EVO 4G may drop in price once the 3D comes out so there is another option.

You will not be able to upgrade in one year. That right has now been reserved for those that have been with Sprint for ten years. Those of us with eight are out of luck. As unhappy as I am with that I am not really interested in the 3d. Two 5mp cameras instead of one 8 (which works really well). No kickstand. I am plenty happy with my evo, and since they changed the premiere deal I may look elsewhere and use this as my excuse. Also, after one year, my evo still seems blazingly fast.

I don't understand then. According to this site:

Sprint Premier Gold and Silver | FAQ

You are a Premier customer as long as you have been with Sprint for 6 months and have a 89.99 plan or higher for 3...

Q:How do I qualify for S|P Gold or S|P Silver?
A:Effective April, 1, 2011, to qualify for Premier you must be a Sprint customer for at least 6 months, your account must be in good standing and you meet one of the following criteria:
S|P Gold Customers:
Maintain a 3-month average of at least $89.99 for individual plans, or
Maintain a 3-month average of at least $169.99 for shared plans, or
Have been a Sprint customer for 10 years or more.
S|P Silver Customers:
Maintain a 3-month average of at least $69.99 - $89.98 for individual plans, or
Maintain a 3-month average of at least $99.99 - $169.98 for shared plans,
Note: Once you reach 10 years of service with Sprint, you are automatically graduated to S|P Gold status regardless of the plan you are on.
*3-month average includes base rate plans only. Add-on services do not qualify. The average is figured per plan before any discounts are applied. Additional lines on shared plans or multiple plans on the same account do not count toward the minimum spending requirement.

I'd wait if I could. Even if I didn't want the EVO3d in the long run (which you probably won't know until it actually comes out), you will be able to score a cheap(er) EVO after the new hotness comes out.

My 2 cents, if you can build your own computer, you can definitely root and upgrade an EVO.

I got to agree with alot of people here. I would wait to see how the 3D will be. For once I'm not waiting for my upgrade as I plan to keep the Evo for awhile. Its been one hell of a phone for me. I'm very happy with it.

My Evo has a wonderful matte screen protector that I love, and an extended Seidio battery that makes it run for over 2 days. It's rooted with CM7 which I love and does everything I want it to do. The 8mp camera is great. It now runs Netflix which I can port to a TV when I'm traveling through the HDMI port. I have no difficulty running any Android application I need with grace and ease. LOVE the kickstand and use it daily.

I'm trying to figure out why people are upgrading, because I have no complaints. Zero. None. In fact, even after Sprint releases new phones including the Evo 3D, I'd probably still choose the Evo.

Whats wrong with the EPIC? Sure it has a physical keyboard but i never slide it out and use it.
I had an EVO for 6 months and now that i have an EPIC i am only look at my EVO to keep the software updated as a back up device.
I my self do miss the larger screen size but i like the higher quiality and brighter colors of the EPIC Super AMOLED as well as the speedier processor.
Compare them side by side. Most sprint stores should have a display EVO and EPIC.
Dont take what i am saying as a basch to EVO. It is a good device.

It really comes down to what you fancy.

I must say since Netflix was released a couple days ago.
I love my Evo even more.
Imo, it still feels like a newer technology phone.
It is pretty darn fast when running applications and if your
in a 4g area? Man that just icing on the cake.

I also like the fact it has the best of both worlds.
1. It has a one of most underated feature.A kickstand.
You can use this when viewing video in landscape mode,
Or use it while charging your battery.

Which leads to number 2.

Now that Netflix is live for the Evo you will need to be charging the phone while viewing Netflix. With the Evo'ssn charging port on the bottom natively? It allows for charging in landscape position with no obstructions. The Evo3d as well as the other newer HTC phones,
Has their charging port on the the bottom left that hinder charging while in the landscape position.
For this you need a charging dock that will set.you back about 40 dollars

Imo,the design of the Evo's should have been standard for the current and future HTC phones.

My wife has the epic, and you could not pay me to trade it for my evo. Yes the amoled is great, but it does not make up for everything else. Sense is actually an improvement for me, and touchwiz blows.

I tried to port netflix to my tv but I could not get it to work. Have you actually tried this yet?
