Is it supposed to be this hot?

Hey, I just got the S6 Edge today and set it up. I've noticed that the phone heats up a lot when under a heavy load, which I understand, but when I'm holding it, it feels like it could almost burn me. The phone is not overheating, although when it does heat up I do notice the performance drop. None of this is a dealbreaker, I just wanted to know, is it normal for the phone to get so hot? Is it just because the phone's outer casing is metal and glass rather than plastic that it feels like this? I've already ordered a case to make holding it more bearable, but any insight you guys can provide would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

Use an app called CPU-Z and check the temps for the hardware and battery.

Metal phones get warm easily as it's metal and metal is an excellent heat conductor.

The temperature is in the upper 60s while peaking occasionally in the 80s. The CPUs temperature good unless the standard for CPU heat on a smartphone is different from a desktop. I guess that just means the material of the phone is too heat conductive.

That's pretty toasty. My G4's highest temperature on it's Snapdragon 808 is 74 degrees.

It certainly feels toasty. However, as long as it's not going into 90C+ territory I don't mind. Thank you for suggesting that app so I can see the temp. Either way, so long as it's not about to overheat, I can live with it being hot so long as I have a case. Also, it looks like my S6 edge just got the 5.1 update so I'll see if that included a fix for the heat.

As for the performance drop, most modern CPUs drop speed when they get hot. The faster they run the more heat they generate, so when they get hot they throttle down to keep from overheating and destroying themselves - which results in a "performance drop".

The Exynos 7420 uses an identical setup as the Snapdragon 810 so it being toasty isn't that much of a surprise
