Hey guys,

I keep getting conflicting info so I'm coming here for a hopefully direct and correct answer.

I am going to Italy in a week for vacation and I want to get a European sim card for my brand new Galaxy S5 (bought this week). I understand that my phone needs to be unlocked to do this. Some people are saying it's already unlocked with Verizon and other people are saying I need an unlock code. Can anyone tell me FOR SURE if I am unlocked or not? I've never used my phone overseas so am I literally just pulling out my sim card and popping in a european one? Is there a specific card I need for my model phone?

Any info would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi Crow,

I don't own a Verizon S5, but from what I know and from the Verizon work iPhone I have, yes, they do ship unlocked. Just check to see if your model is compatible with the Italian carrier you want to use before you leave. You might be stuck with only voice or 2G data depending on the carrier.

If you want to make sure it is unlocked before you leave, just get anyone with a SIM card from another carrier to lend you theirs. Pop it into your phone, wait a few moments, and presto! If it's unlocked, you should be able to use your phone with another carrier. Actually, if the phone is NOT unlocked and you insert a SIM from another company, it'll ask for the unlock code right away before it even boots.

Hi. I own a verizon s5 and yes it is unlocked. When I visited my home country, I put international gsm sim card and it works. However, you wont get any LTE network. You will just get 3G network

Well, since the S5 is LTE capable, it should accept a sim card from anywhere, as long as the radio bands match.

Any 4G LTE Verizon phone is unlocked. This is due to an FCC regulation in order to allow them to expand their 4G Network.
