SD Card write protected

New to Galaxy Tab S, I have a 64GB sd card I used on my dead ASUS Transformer Prime. When I put it in my Tab S it is visible in My Files, all the folders are there, but when I try to do anything I get [folder] create failed, [file] move failed, failed to delete, etc. Basically anything I try to do fails. When I hook up to my pc and try to do anything I get a message 'The storage is write protected. Remove the protection and try again'. I can't find any way to remove the protection or reformat the sd card.

Where do I need to go or what do I need to do?

Have you checked the physical lock slider tab on the side of the SD card to make sure it is not in the locked position? Many people don't even know there is a sliding lock tab on the card.

Re: SD Card write protected

Evidently the ASUS was running 4.3 or earlier. Until then the card was treated as an external storage device. Since 4.4 it's part of the file system, so an app that didn't create a folder can't write to it. You have two options - learn to live with it the way it is (put the card in a card reader and plug it into your computer, copy all files out of a folder you want an app to be able to write to, delete the folder, put the apps back in, put the card back in the tab and let the app create the folder - or root the tab and run an app like NextApp SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD (root).

@leerandall:
It's a microSD card - no write-protect slider.

Re: SD Card write protected

The ASUS was on Ice Cream Sandwich so you're right. You're also right about microSD not having the slider. Since I can't create a folder with My Files because of the write protect, I guess I'll need to get a new card. Bummer.

You're correct, of course. It's been so long since I put my card into my Tab S, I forgot that the micro SD card didn't require an SD adapter, which does have a write-protect tab.

Re: SD Card write protected

Since micro sd cards do not have a physical slider to lock content, I wonder if there's some utility that can do that and it was somehow invoked????

Re: SD Card write protected

I too was having a problem copying or moving files to my Micro SD cards on both my Asus MemoTab (Android 5.0)and TF701T (Android 4.4) tablets. I was using ES File Explorer and the copy/move actions always failed. I tried the original "File Manager" in Android and it works fine. I was able to copy and move files to the Micro Sd and also copied files from my PC over the network to the Micro SD. I've read about something that some of the apps (like ES Explorer) are missing a permission that Google put in their updates starting with Kit Kat 4.4. Maybe this tip will help some of you with the Micro SD Problem.

Re: SD Card write protected

Yes, make sure you're using Samsung's File explorer app, not a third party one.

Re: SD Card write protected

In Android 6 I am having the same issue (Google doesnt like SD cards)... Some 3rd party file managers (like Total Commander) are able to request the write permission to the external SD card... I just need to figure out how to disable this useless write protection for all apps because many third party apps are not able to request that permission for some reason.
