Is "OK Google" enabled with screen off?

With the phone locked, "OK Google" had been disabled on earlier Samsung phones like my S7E.

My brother's TMobile note 8 has it. I was really surprised it was there since it wasn't on my s7e and i figured they'd want you to use bixby.

Works for me. But I believe an update has changed it a little... When I first got my Note 8 I was able to say 'OK Google' and the assistant would immediately pop up and take my input bypassing having to get through security first but not anymore.

Before, I could take the phone out of my pocket, locked, and say "OK google, and when I feel the vibration feedback to indicate it activated, I could immediately say something like, "Directions to Ft. Lauderdale Airport" and it will bring up directions result on Google Assistant.

Now, when the phone is locked, I can say google assistant and I'll get the vibration, but goes straight retina scan so I already have the phone at eye level and then it goes to Google Assistant. But the mic is still hot so once I see the Assistant, I can then say whatever I want it to do.

So long story short, it works.

Glad to know I'm not going crazy...I really liked it when you could just say Ok Google. But I guess that's too much of a security issue. Would be nice though if you could just opt in and take your chances.

Yeah, "OK GOOGLE" is enabled with screen off. I use it mostly to tell me the time and weather, or to send someone a text, or open my map to drive to work. All with screen "off".

Do you have the "trusted voice" option in the voice settings of the Google app? Having that selected should fix the problem unless Sammy disabled it.

I believe it was off with the S8 and didn't bother for N8. However google release the app in the play store, after installing I tried it and it works just fine.

That could be it! I think I remember having the option to enable trusted voice when setting up the Note... but after reading your post I go to settings and I don't have the option (picture below).

Maybe an update took it away. Also to note, I could be running Google app Beta because last time I ran an Android phone I was on their beta and I guess it carry over and still on their beta list. Hmm... sucks if that's the case.

Do you see the option in your settings?. I may try disabling the beta and get regular version.

The TMobile note 8 has the trusted voice option like my v20 does so I'm sure that's the culprit.

Ok Google works just fine with the screen off for my N8. Just double check your settings as mentioned already.
