Is rooting 2.3.4 possible?

Okay for months I have been trying to root my Evo Shift running Gingerbread 2.3.4 and I have tried quite a few methods with no success. I even paid for an auto root method that dropped a trojan on my pc. Now there is supposed to be a method that will root any HTC phone which I also tried and again no luck. I have even went as far as installing Linux on my pc to get this done with no success. I took no updates after installing 2.3.4 so my question to those who know: Is it possible to root 2.3.4? Should I take the latest update and try from there?
Oh and yes I am still S-on because HTCdev no longer supports the Shift. And no to other supported devices or other listed Sprint devices will work either.

Okay. So after a few days of rest and a clearer frame of mind I came across these two tidbits that are supposed to achieve S-Off. Juopunutbear and Revolutionary. Neither of these two applications seem to be the latest and most up to date methods to achieve S-Off it is just that my frustration caused a mental block that I was unable to break through. Mind you as of today I have not tried either method but when I do I will post whether it was a success or not.

Yes, I rooted mine a month ago using my the following method:

If you need to backup any phone contacts that are not synced with google, back them up to your sd card before proceeding.

Go to Welcome to HTCdev and create a free account if you don't already have one.
Select the link to "Unlock Bootloader"
When you are asked to select your phone model, scroll to the bottom of the list and select ?All Other Supported Models?
Follow all the instructions to unlock your bootloader. **Please note this process will wipe your data from your phone (but will not wipe the removable sd card). Reinstalling apps is easy since the play store keeps a record of all apps you have ever installed! Kiss your angry birds game progress goodbye though LOL!**

Another note, after unlocking the first boot up took longer than normal, but just wait it out. Also the phone booted into safe mode which I had never seen before. However once I ran through the initial setup procedure (entering your gmail account and password, etc.) and ran the system updates and rebooted, everything was normal!

Now you need to get the HTC Quick Root software on your computer at [APP] Updated: 07/09/12 - HTC Quick Root v1.1.13 - ROOT ANY HTC! - xda-developers

Before starting the program, on your phone make sure you Enable USB Debugging (go to Settings, Applications, then Development) and Disable 'Fastboot' under (go to Settings, Power) before using HTC Quick Root.

Now plug your phone into the USB port on your computer and run HTC Quick Root. Use the Universal Exploit method in the drop down menu.

Once this runs and the phone reboots, close the HTC Quick root Software and then reopen it. The software will then show that SuperSU and Busybox have both been installed. The interesting thing is that your phone will still be S-ON but you now have full root access!

I rooted this way as well so thanks for posting! That said, have you guys had any trouble flashing ROMs? I want to install CyanogenMod but am nervous about S-Off still being "On"

Does anyone have the root files for the evo shift laying around somewhere? It appears that all the links I come across are outdated.
