Is Rooting Needed??

I just got the Thunderbolt and have not rooted it yet, so my question is...If I have apps for the droid that I downloaded, does it have to be rooted for me to install them or can I put them in a specified folder to make them work?
For instance: angry_birds_riov1.0.apk <---what folder do I put this in?

Im not sure if there is a certain place that you SHOULD put it or not. I just made a folder for it and put it in there. then I got a file explorer app and fine the file and run it from there. Make sure you phone settings allow for 3rd party installs
