No, its not the perfect phone, and I don't expect we'll ever see one. This is both by intent, as well as the realities of the relentless march of technological progress. Not to mention the necessity of producing a common device that will appeal to the masses, as everyone's definition of perfect is different.
Then there's the issue of the time lag between the development of a new technology or component and how long it will be before phones actually hit the market with it. Thus, the features of any new phone will fall short of expectations, as we'll all hear about next-gen components that have no chance of being implemented in a device yet but expect them in upcoming superphones. And of course everyone's desires will always change as they get used to the best of current tech and hear about ever-advancing future tech.
My dream-phone based on currently announced tech and components would have a 720p SuperAMOLED+ flexible display protected with WillowGlass, an Exynos 5250, 2gb lpddr3ram, a Lytro light-field camera (after-shot infinite focus), a moderately flexible battery that can last all day, all wrapped in a Liquid Metal case with a TPU trim strip around the edges. The entire thing would be moderately flexible, not floppy, but think of a credit card where it'll bend and torque a bit with no ill effects. Seal it and nano-coat the ports to make it water resistant like the Razr, and give it some sort of a premium finish. And of course provide an unlockable bootloader (that can be encrypted if desired for the corporate world), as well as factory images on the manufacturer's website, both for the "customized" version as well as stock AOSP built for that hardware.
I honestly hoped some of those features would make their way into the SGS3, and they didn't, so no, it isn't perfect. I suspect that we'll see a phone with very similar specs to the one I described within a year's time or so, but by that time it won't be the perfect phone either, since we'll all know about even more powerful and revolutionary hardware.
So I think the SGS3 is a great phone, and is certainly the best one so far this year. One series kills me with its lack of an sd slot, and nothing else really stands up to it at this point. The only phone that we can expect soon that may match it is the Droid Razr HD, but I don't see it having anywhere near as much developer support. This is certainly the best phone from a sales volume standpoint, as it has a unified design, universal name, unified marketing, and availability to nearly everyone on the planet within a month or so of each other. This is the real kicker, as this beats even the iPhone.
So its the best phone yet, may be the best for quite some time, certainly will be no worse than tied. A marketing director's dream, but the perfect phone for everyone it is not, nor ever will be.
