is the evo worth it?

You can't go wrong getting an Evo. It's one of the best phones out there. It is important to note, though, that it is impossible to play catch up with technology because it is always a million steps ahead of you. That being said, just because the Evo has been out for almost a year, does not mean that it is obsolete or will not retain it's value for a significant amount of time. Technology is always advancing in ways that are hard to calculate and understand, so it is simply best to buy a product that meets your needs and keeps you happy for as long as you would like it to. I say.... get an Evo ;) you won't be disappointed :)

I love my EVO and still think it is the best phone on the market, but I would wait for just a bit longer to make the jump. Sprint did not have much to show off at CES, but MWC and CITA are coming up very soon (Feb and March) so there may be new devices announced. At CES, Qualcomm also quietly showed off a dual core processor with much better GPU support, which will alleviate what currently is the only slight complaint I have with the EVO. Plus Sprint is announcing something on the 7th of Feb that should be good (hopefully) so I would definitely wait and see what Sprint and HTC has in store for us.

I got my Evo in late October and I couldnt be any happier... Its a great device and holds up to the competition.... Like mentioned before technology is always more advanced then we will ever know.... I would recommend it to anyone... You cant go wrong with it.. Plus there are so many customizations you can do to it.... So as of now I am so keeping till a better device comes out......;)

I'm also in the situation of paying the $10 fee when I don't have 4G available in my area. Given that even with the fee my plan is still cheaper than comparable AT&T or Verizon plans, though, I don't think it should be much of a factor.

I agree. 4G doesn't work where I live, is pretty sparse where I work and where I go around Atlanta and I'm not enamored with the $10 a month charge for something I can't really use, but the EVO rocks. I love it. I have no problem sticking with it for my two year contract no matter what newer or better phone comes out. I don't need the latest and greatest technology all the time. I need technology that does what I need it to do and the EVO has that covered, for me. I think it's worth it.

Waiting to me is silly...The OP is paying 40 bucks more for Verizon service....something announced on 2/7 he will still be in his 30 days...trade the phone but unless its an EVO 2 which by my calculations will not be released until 6/11 ....the announcement is mum in this thread.

Now lets do the math ....$40 extra with BIG RED x 6 months of waiting for something =$240 to put toward that new and shiny whatever tops the evo and still selling your evo for $200 bucks on ebay = a whopping $440 ouch....vs waiting waiting and waiting....

By the way...OP evo for 119 for new customers.

This is a tough call, I would at least wait until after the February announcement. You would probably be disappointed to buy the Evo (which is STILL a great phone) then see that something even better is coming out the pipeline.

The Evo is not a brand new device, but when it was released, the specs put it into a position that would keep it at the top for a long time. Even after the CES announcements from Verizon, the Evo is still holding it's ground as a top-dog. I am due for an upgrade right now, but there is nothing better than the Evo, so what else am I going to do? I am going to wait and see what is in store in the next couple of months, then decide. If Sprint doesn't announce a new Android worthy of replacing my Evo, I will have no problem keeping it for another 6-8 months either, I am totally happy with this phone.

My wife just got the EVO two weeks ago, makes us one big EVO family...

Get it!

Unfortunately, the only thing I don't like in the EVO is Sprint... But the money factor is great.

For starters, my apologies to the admins. I have tried posting this question on a few other posts, but no one seems to be responding. Sorry. My bad.

On to my question: I've been on verizon for over 3 years. I have the Dinc, and I got it by signing up for a 2 year contract last year. I've been looking at their policies changes lately, unofficial or not, and on top of the ridiculous charges, and now the iphone coming to verizon (...yea...), I'm planning on switching very soon. Their coverage is great in my area, panhandle of ohio, but I'm tired of getting gipped.

Anyway, I want to get the Evo. Seems like the perfect replacement, possible upgrade, from what I have now, and was wondering is it worth it? I have compared the specs to most of the newer Android devices coming out, and it seems to me like the evo is still pretty relevant and can still hang with the best. I've checked out Sprint's coverage around here, and despite not having 4g, :(, it seems like they have pretty decent coverage.

Anybody around the tri-state area give me any feedback?

I can't speak for the service Sprint has available in your area, but I just had a dilemma similar to yours. I was with AT&T, and the service was beyond absurd so I needed a change. My choices were either Verizon or Sprint. I ended up going with Sprint because it was way cheaper, but I picked the Evo (this was the end of December). I could have easily waited as I was still in contract with AT&T (service is literally that bad), but I feel the Evo will be just as viable in a year as it is now. Sure there will be more 4G devices and some dual-core devices, but IMHO even an above "average" user won't even tax the EVO all that much. My gripe on it is the battery but the Seidio extended battery saves the day without making the device too huge.

Just my two cents from someone who just got an EVO within the last few weeks.

Very good points. That's the way I'm trying to look at it. Maybe $40 isn't a lot to some people, but hell, it's $40!

I mean, I do like big red, but it's getting ridiculous anymore. And I think it's time to try something new.

Edit:After looking around, I also found it on amazon wireless for $99. ooooooh man I can't wait :)

Thanks again for all the feedback everybody :) It's nice to know a lot of you have been in my shoes at one point or another, and not only is it reassuring to hear the positive experiences you've had not just with the device, but with Sprint as well, speaks volumes to me.

A few of you are right though. While I do want the Evo, I won't have the money right away. I'll definitely be looking forward to February 7th.

Man, you guys rock! \m/ >_< \m/

I'm in a similar boat, but I'm holding onto a rapidly deteriorating Pre and can upgrade on the 1st of February. As others have said, the Evo still has specs that will be high end for at least another 6-8 months, possibly a year. Just because dual core phones come out doesn't mean applications will be multi-threaded enough to truly benefit from it.

In a year, there is zero chance an Evo will ever feel "slow". If you're on a Sprint Premier plan, you get an upgrade every year anyway, so pick up a new device at that time.

I considered the Epic but don't want to risk another slider.

I'm waiting for Sprint on the 7th and HP's WebOS event on the 9th before I make any decisions, but it would take quite a bit to derail me from an Evo.

"Wait and see" arguments are stupid. If we did that, no one would ever buy any phone or electronic gadget because there's ALWAYS something newer and/or better on the horizon 3, 6 or 9 months from now. Instead of "wait and see", see if the products that interest you do what you need them to do, have reliable hardware, have good specs that aren't outdated already, and are well-supported both by the manufacturer and the community. If all of the above is true, there's no reason not to dive in and you'll probably save a lot of money doing so (as opposed to buying the latest and greatest on release day).

The EVO has aged VERY well compared to Sprint's other flagship phones (Instinct and Pre, LOL...and I say that as a former Pre owner). While it might not be the highest spec'ed phone out there, it's certainly not going to be outdated or obsolete any time soon, even if you never bother to root your phone and try some of the huge number of custom ROMs available for it.

"Wait and see" arguments are stupid.
They're usually stupid, they're not always stupid. For example, it would have been incredibly dumb of a Verizon customer with an upgrade and an Apple inclination to decide "Hey, I'll buy a Droid Incredible" the day before Verizon's iPhone announcement.

This is a similar situation.

Sprint has an announcement at the beginning of February. Who's to say AT&T won't have something brewing for March to combat losing iPhone exclusivity and Verizon or T-Mobile won't have something else to throw into their own press conferences in April and May? And then, of course, Apple will hype the hell out of their new model iPhone in June like they always do. Rinse and repeat for every month in the future.

Again, playing the waiting game when it comes to electronics means you'll never actually buy anything and just wait for ever and ever. You have to draw the line somewhere if you intend to make a purchase.

I agree that line should be drawn, but not before significant announcements pertaining to new architectures, new hardware releases, or large leaps forward in functionality, features, or capability.

In 3-4 weeks we will have a better picture of the roadmap for the next 6-12 months. I am not saying wait each month to buy, I'm saying if there's an imminent announcement of significance, you would be a fool to buy before you know what could potentially be released in a better a) upgrade timetable, b) financial timetable, c) hardware timetable.

It's not that complicated.

I actually really agree with Disgustoid; the consumer needs to be aware that something is GOING TO be bigger & better just around the corner - no matter when you buy, and the consumer just needs to come to terms with this. As soon as the consumer has peace about this, go out and buy. I think 2 weeks is the max I would wait for an announcement. And that timeline shortens drastically if there is a GREAT PRICE that you can get the currently available model for.

What's even funnier here is that the OP has checked out of this convo and stated that they are going to wait a few weeks - we are all arguing with ourselves at this point. :)

Nah, I'm still here. I agree that waiting too long is pointless (sometimes), but in this case I'm not really waiting a long time. They're making an announcement in 3 weeks or so, so it's not a ridiculous amount of time. It's probably going to take me that long to get the $ together anyway. The timing couldn't be better.

I know maybe 1 person who owns the Evo, and he can't stop raving about it, but I just wanted to get some more feedback from the community as to what they thought about their devices, and if they could still hold up today.

It's all good. This is what I want. Feedback. I wanna know what you guys think. keep it up :)

Well, considering that the specs for the Evo are on par with a lot of devices that are being released, which I would not be aware if not for the AWESOME community here, there's a good chance that it will still be top-notch after a year.

Guess I'll find out here in a few weeks. :D

aren't there always going to be new things on the horizon? 4-6 mos is a LONG time in techno world. Waiting for . . . . seems like a never-ending wait.

I hope I don't get in any trouble for posting this but here goes. I have a blog dedicated to everyday use of my EVO. It's a fairly new blog with just a few post right now, I'm using my EVO for everything I need it for including a computer. So I'm trying to post at least once a week about my use and app reviews that I'm using. Some of the post are nothing new or exciting, most of you are doing the same thing I am I'm sure. My latest post is a rant about the games that are available on Android. The address is. http://evosmartphone.blogspot.com if anybody is interested. I post this here in answer to the question is the EVO worth it. Absoulty, this is the best phone I've ever had, and it could very well be a laptop replacement, or a mini tablet computer as well as a phone, and a handheld GPS. This phone has it all and hasn't last me down yet. It used to be a good test for a phone browser was to try to log into a secure web site, if you couldn't then the browser was just ok, if you could then you had a good browser. The EVO has logged into every secure web site I've tried it with.
